Bumrungrad Hospital announces its vision to be the leader of smart healthcare 5.0 technology, aiming to provide holistic medical care to all patients.

In 2022, Bumrungrad plans to focus on two medical advancements: robotic surgery and genetic testing. The hospital has adopted robotic-assisted surgery, using the da Vinci surgical system to perform operations on multiple organ systems.

The company also provides comprehensive genomic and genetic testing to assess the risks of developing hereditary conditions as well as to actively prevent some illnesses, like cancer and coronary artery disease.

The comprehensive genomic and genetic testing also helps with pregnancy plans and prevents natal genetic disorders, said the hospital. This information enables the hospital to prevent harmful reactions to certain medications, allowing physicians to choose the best medication or alternative for each patient.

Artirat Charukitpipat, chief executive of Bumrungrad International Hospital, said Bumrungrad has been in operation for 42 years and still holds true to its initial vision.

"We thrive to be a Thai hospital that meets international safety standards in delivering healthcare services and the best treatment to every visitor," said Ms Artirat.

"We do not solely aim to make a profit as we also take corporate social responsibility into account."

Bumrungrad is determined to improve quaternary care and expand its centres into developing expertise in treating every complex medical condition, she said.

The hospital's multidisciplinary teams of medical professionals work together to deliver the best treatment.

Ms Artirat said Bumrungrad's strengths lie in 3C's: critical care, complicated care and collaboration of expertise.

Critical care means innovative medical technology and systematic management keeps team performance in top shape and ready to deliver 24/7 care, she said.

Complicated care focuses on having teams of specialists with expertise in treating complex medical conditions in patients with multiple co-morbidities or with difficult conditions to diagnose, said Ms Artirat.

The Center of Excellence provides holistic treatment for every medical condition as well as transplants for the kidney, heart, liver and eye.

Bumrungrad is the first private hospital in Thailand to successfully perform heart transplants in patients with congestive heart failure, she said.

As for collaboration of expertise, Bumrungrad's multidisciplinary teams of physicians and specialists team up to deliver medical care that yields the best results, especially in treatment of rare diseases, said Ms Artirat.

More than 80% of the rare diseases diagnosed at Bumrungrad are hereditary, like lysosomal storage disorders or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Bumrungrad's wellness and prevention strategy has helped deliver customised, innovative medical care such as genomic and genetic testing to predict and prevent drug allergies, she said.

Dr Taveesin Tanprayoon, chief medical officer at Bumrungrad, said physicians play critical roles in strengthening the hospital's corporate culture.

"At Bumrungrad, physicians maintain international medical standards and ethics," said Dr Taveesin.

"We recruit new physicians who have expertise and experience to team up with our current specialists in treating all medical conditions and to deliver the best medical care and treatment results to our patients."
