The study of light has led to promising alternative energy sources, lifesaving medical advances in diagnostics technology and treatments, light-speed internet and many other discoveries that have revolutionized society and shaped our understanding of the universe. These technologies were developed through centuries of fundamental research on the properties of light – starting with Ibn Al-Haytham’s seminal work, Kitab al-Manazir (Book of Optics), published in 1015 and including Einstein’s work at the beginning of the 20th century, which changed the way we think about time and light. FFA doesn’t have a strong presence in schools in the co-op’s increasingly urban service area, but Wilson had long admired the organization’s school-based career events emphasizing hands-on learning. Instead of agricultural-related jobs, she organized a special STEM Day on April 18 “to get kids excited about careers in energy.” “Educating and attracting more students to pursue careers in energy after graduation is really what this initiative is about,” said Wilson, manager of human resources at the Hiram-based co-op and the event’s main coordinator. “We’re trying to find a way to get in front of more students by showing them our campus.” Learn more about Georgia Co-Op's first STEM Day Promotes Energy Careers at https://ow.ly/YVi050RF0OZ #STEMEducation #EnergyCareers #CareerDevelopment #STEMOPS #Innovation #EducationDevelopment #sySTEMImpactedpodcast #advocacy #STEMeducation #STEMcareers #equityineducation #reentry #formerlyincarcerated #mentoring #hope #rehabilitation #reintegration #lifeafterprison #secondchancesprograms #opportunity #empowerment #hopeforchange #breakingthecycle #transformativejustice #socialjustice #equity

Washington University’s Prison Education Project (PEP) hosted Marisa Omori, Ph.D., to speak about how the development of artificial intelligence, specifically facial recognition technologies, may impact racial inequality in the criminal justice system. Around 20 WashU community members gathered in Hurst Lounge to hear Omori speak in an event titled “Invisible Inequalities: Mechanisms of Racial Inequality in the Criminal Legal System,” including many faculty who work with PEP. The talk was a part of PEP’s annual Maggie Garb Lecture Series. Benard Mckinley was convicted of murder as a teen and was sentenced to spend his entire life behind bars. Despite this, he remained eager to get an education. Given the chance to apply to Northwestern University’s competitive Prison Education Program — which provides a liberal arts education to incarcerated students — McKinley seized the opportunity. Out of 400 applicants across Illinois, he was one of 40 people accepted. Next up is law school. In a poll of 5,000 people across the pond, 59% said that companies which recruit system-impacted people are making a positive contribution to society, while 50% said those companies are more socially responsible than those which don’t. When asked how they would feel about their own employer offering a job to a system-impacted individual, 79% said they would feel comfortable working with someone released from prison in the past six months. However, only one in three said they would be comfortable with their employer hiring a current prisoner or taking one on as an apprentice. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/g5sUDCUZ and sound off! Do you think that system-impacted people should get a fair chance at a career? Special thanks to Charlotte West and the Open Campus media team for putting this information together on the Federal Student Aid an Office of the U.S. Department of Education's recent announcement about loan consolidation for incarcerated borrowers plus an important reminder on Fresh Start, the temporary federal program to get defaulted loans into good standing, which is necessary to access Pell Grants. The loan consolidation doesn't have a deadline, but officials say that borrowers should take advantage of Fresh Start while it's available (until September 30).
