President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has expressed his “highest gratitude” to foreign leaders assembled in Bali for agreeing to a joint declaration to conclude the Group of 20 Summit in a year marked by geopolitical division.

In a live briefing on Wednesday, the President said the G20 under Indonesia’s presidency, which had begun with the “common intention” of an “inclusive recovery” from the COVID-19 pandemic, had faced challenges that not only hampered that very recovery but could plunge the world “into a deeper crisis”.

“It has been an honor for Indonesia to lead the G20 over the past year,” President Jokowi said, adding that the country had proposed solutions for various issues during its year-long presidency of the forum.

“Thank God, today we adopted the G20 Bali Leaders’ Declaration; this is the first of its kind since February 2022.”

The most-debated paragraph was one on the war in Ukraine, the President revealed in a separate press briefing on Wednesday afternoon. “We discussed about this until late at night, and at the end, the Bali Declaration was adopted unanimously,” Jokowi said.

Asked about explosions reported in Poland during the night before, which some had blamed on Russia before US President Joe Biden expressed doubts about that, the Indonesian President stated, speaking in English: “I call on all parties to remain calm and refrain from escalating tension. I always state that war will only bring devastation. Therefore, we must stop the war. And President Biden himself has already said that the missile is unlikely to have come from Russia.”
