Environmental Issues Hinder Tesla's Investment in Indonesia
The government emphasizes that environmental issues are one of the determinants of Tesla Inc's investment. Director for Coordination and Mining at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Septian Hario Seto, said that sustainable environmental management is the focus of world automotive manufacturers. When the government offers nickel potential as raw material for electric car batteries, carmakers like Ford and Tesla always ask about environmental issues in the nickel mining process.
"This is something we can't avoid. When we discuss with Tesla and Ford, they always ask how many tons of nickel carbon emissions we produce; how do we handle emissions at a nickel smelter," Septian said on Tuesday, adding that such encouragement makes Indonesian industry adopt sustainable practices. If the mining industry does not implement sustainable practices, there is a risk that the resulting product will not sell well in the global market.
