Making a Home on the Alaskan North Slope: Our Fourth IAART Podcast
Making a Home on the Alaskan North Slope: Our Fourth IAART Podcast
In this episode, we are going about as rural as rural gets in the United States. To the North Slope of Alaska.
While stories of 24 hour darkness, 10 dollar gallons of milk, and towns with no roads out are always popular when talking about far northern Alaska, there is so much more to these places.

The village of Atqasuk (AHT-ka-suk) is home to about 250 residents. Bright colored houses line the dirt streets, to offset the flat, dark landscapes of winter. The village sits on the Meade River, so fishing is big here. Caribou is a main source of protein. With many families practicing traditional subsistence based life styles to get a majority of their food.

Greetings from the Biden-Harris Transition!
Get Connected: We recently launched buildbackbetter.gov which will provide useful information for your organization. You can also follow the Transition (@Transition46) on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for news and updates.

Policy: If you have memos or policy proposals for anyone on transition, you can submit them to me at wmcintee@jbrpt.org, and I will get this in the right place.
Meeting Requests: We want to hear from stakeholders across the country on a range of policy issues. Please give us time to get up and running, but if you could fill this form, that would be helpful. We know stakeholders will provide key insights and recommendations on critical policy considerations, and access to networks of qualified, dedicated, diverse talent that will help make this new Administration look like America.
Personnel: We’re working to build a diverse Cabinet and administration that looks like America and reflects President-elect Biden’s core values: a commitment to integrity, transparency, and upholding the highest ethical standards in order to build back the public trust. This also means recruiting a staff that brings a diversity of perspectives and background, talent, experience, and expertise to address America’s most complex challenges. If you have personnel recommendations, please provide them using this spreadsheet template. If you want to simply direct those interested in serving, please send them to this form to submit resumes.

Thank you again for all of that you do! We look forward to continuing our important work together.

Connect Americans Now (CAN) Encourages Congress to Swiftly and Fully Fund Broadband Mapping Fixes
Connect Americans Now (CAN) Encourages Congress to Swiftly and Fully Fund Broadband Mapping Fixes
Washington, D.C. – Connect Americans Now (CAN) sent a letter Thursday to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House Committees on Appropriation and the leaders of the relevant subcommittees encouraging lawmakers to swiftly and fully fund implementation of broadband mapping solutions at the first available opportunity.

“Connect Americans Now (CAN) writes to respectfully encourage Congress to swiftly and fully fund implementation of the Broadband DATA Act to allow for urgently needed improvements to the nation’s broadband mapping data,” the letter, from CAN executive director Richard T. Cullen states. “These improvements, which will help accurately measure the full scale and location of the digital divide in America, are essential to guiding public and private investments to close the broadband gap.”

“CAN has been a strong proponent of more precise broadband maps to better direct public and private investments in broadband and enthusiastically supported the bipartisan Broadband DATA Act, which Congress passed, and President Trump signed into law earlier this year,” the letter continues. “The passage of this important legislation demonstrated the commitment of lawmakers, in both parties, to working collaboratively to address the digital divide that leaves millions of Americans without access to broadband internet.”

“Now, Congress must finish the job by providing the resources needed for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to begin implementation of this important solution at the first available opportunity,” the letter notes. “Without funding for implementation, the FCC cannot begin the critical work of producing new, accurate maps.”

“For the millions of Americans who lack access to a broadband connection, the pandemic has exacerbated the many challenges associated with the digital divide,” the letter says. “Congress must act to eliminate the digital divide for these Americans. The swift and full funding of improved broadband maps will be an important first step.”
