A Message from our Chairman
Dear Members and Friends,

Sustainability is the future of business. People are becoming much more concerned with sustainable business practices. I was informed that Millennials are known for being extremely interested in social good - and they reportedly would pay 10-25% more for a sustainable product.
Generation Z also follows this trend towards more sustainable living. Their top priority is to tackle climate change and 81% of them believe that businesses need to contribute towards this.
Seeing as both generations are set to become the majority workers and consumers in the future, businesses must quickly understand their attitudes towards sustainability.
Reliable research by Oxford University and others confirms that good sustainability and ESG practices correlate with lower operating costs, better profitability, and superior share price performance.
It has been shown that companies that best manage their environmental and social impact and have better governance practices are more profitable in the medium to long term. There are numerous studies on this topic conducted by academics and financial analysts. A recent global survey revealed that 75% of senior executives in investment firms agree that a company’s sustainability performance is materially important to their investment decisions, and nearly 50% would not invest in a company with a poor sustainability track record. Many countries in the Asia-Pacific, including Malaysia are catching up with this trend.
The BCSD Malaysia, the newest chapter of the WBCSD in the Asia-Pacific, is ready, willing, and able to play the “honest broker” role in meeting the sustainability aspirations of companies in this country.
Come, join us in this noble endeavor!

Prof. Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid

An Update from our Executive Director
Dear Members and Friends,

The last few months have been extremely fruitful and important for BCSD Malaysia, albeit the COVID-19 pandemic's pain and restrictions that are affecting everyone’s lives.
We finalized the setup of the organization and established all the necessary operational and governance processes that allow us to run a well-functioning non-profit organization.
We also have spent considerable time engaging with many of you to find out what are the priority areas for business and sustainability in Malaysia.
We have come up with a priority list and a number of ideas that we are now transforming into projects with precise objectives, strategies and deliverables. Hopefully we will be able to start-up some of them very soon with the help and support of our members and stakeholders.
The areas of interventions we have identified include plastics recycling and circular economy, biodiversity preservation, energy transition and net-zero GHG emissions, green financing, urban mobility and human rights.
Meanwhile, we have run cutting edge events on human rights, enterprise risk management and ESG, the energy transition, biodiversity and ecosystem services.
We have big ambitions. We have capable people and we can count on loads of knowledge and expertise made available to us through our affiliation with WBCSD and its Global Network. Now we need more companies committed to work together towards sustainability; committed to ensure that systemic transformation happens in support of the SDGs and on a pathway to a world in which over nine billion people are expected to live well, within the boundaries of the planet by mid-century. We need you!

Circular Economy: Recycling plastics from hospitals and home care
The work of the the Circular Economy Group has started with the plastics recycling project targeting the huge recycling potential in the healthcare sector.

Plastics account for about one-third of a hospital’s general waste, most of which is sent to landfills in Malaysia. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is widely used in healthcare in IV fluid bags, tubing, oxygen masks. PVC is identified on products or packaging by the Plastics Identification Code ‘3’. It is estimated that PVC represents 25% hospital plastic waste.

BAXTER Healthcare has just joined BCSD Malaysia to help spearhead this initiative on the back of huge experience that the company has already acquired with similar programmes in Australia and New Zealand.

"For more than 25 years in Malaysia, Baxter has been making a meaningful difference for patients and creating lasting social, environmental and economic value in the communities we serve. Our employees are passionate about our mission, which is reflected in our portfolio of life-saving and sustaining products. Baxter is committed to improving the sustainability of its products, including how products are made, shipped and recycled. In Malaysia, we are pleased to have partnered with BCSD to explore local initiatives such as recycling renal dialysis bags after being used by patients nationwide. We aim to continue to bring successful sustainability projects from other countries into Malaysia."

The BCSD Malaysia led programme aims at collecting non-contaminated used PVC medical products for recycling into useful secondary raw material to be used for the manufacturing of new products.

Each tonne of recycled PVC will
replace about one tonne of virgin PVC compound in new products,
consuming 80% less energy and reducing carbon emissions.

Contact us if you are interested in joining the Circular Economy Group and contribute to the success of the Plastics Recycling initiative.

SIRIM to introduce a new standard on Upcycling.
image
Ask BCSD - What is Upcycling?
Upcycling is the practice of creating a useable product from waste or unwanted items, or converting its use in order to maintain or have increased value and/or quality in a second and new life-cycle. The purpose of upcycling is reducing waste and improving the efficiency of resource use.
SIRIM Berhad is the centre of excellence in standardisation, facilitating industries and businesses in enhancing their production and competitiveness, protecting consumers’ health and safety, and giving them the choice for quality products and services.
SIRIM is currently working on a new standard on UPCYCLING. This Standard has been developed by the Project Committee on Upcycling established by SIRIM Berhad.

BCSD Malaysia was invited with a few other stakeholders on December 2nd to provide feedback on this new standard which is expected to be released in the coming months.

This standard was developed with the following objectives:
  • To provide common and structured understanding on upcycling;
  • To specify the requirements for key processes for an organisation to implement upcycling; and
  • To address quality, safety and environmental concerns on upcycling.

On 21 Oct 2020, BCSD Malaysia organised the conference titled 'FUTURE PROOFING YOUR ENERGY STRATEGY', an event part of IGEM 2020, in collaboration with the British High Commission in Malaysia and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development - WBCSD.

The energy transition offers new opportunities for energy users to rethink how they source and consume low-carbon energy and collaborate with stakeholders across their value chain to benefit from new technologies, business models and financing mechanisms.

This conference examined how leaders in the field are developing and implementing ambitious, integrated energy strategies, and how collaboration has increased their ability to benefit from additional revenue streams, and extended impact across their value chains. 7 prominent experts shared valuable insight how companies can manage the transition to low-carbon energy and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
