Leanne Niziol is a medical student at the University of Manitoba. She is Dehcho Dene and Shuta Got'ine. She is a citizen of Pehdzeh Ki First Nation, Northwest Territories, which is the northernmost Dene community in the Dehcho region, located along the Mackenzie River. She was raised in her traditional territory with a strong connection to her culture and community. Aaniin Boozhoo, Tan’si, Greetings from IPAC, I want to start by reflecting on the spring equinox that just recently occurred. This is an exciting time of year when the day and night become equal and mark the start of longer days to come. I am enjoying hearing the songs of our winged relatives and the chirps of our little four legged ones as they play and dance to celebrate the rebirth of the land. Mother Earth is waking up from her rest and our medicines are starting to peek through the earth. New life is starting and it is a time of renewal for all things. Today I planted some tobacco seeds that I harvested from my plants last year, so that I can continue this circle and grow new medicines to use in ceremony... |

As I write this message I reflect on something my daughter said this morning at breakfast; She was talking about US President Biden approving the Willow Project in Alaska. As a teenager, her TikTok is flooded with peer-to-peer Calls to Action, imploring everyone to sign the petition against the project which is expected to pump between 278 and 287 million metric tons of greenhouse gas pollution into our atmosphere.
