Register now for 17 April Event
It’s quite surreal to think we’re approaching our 2nd (or 3rd for some of us) month of social distancing and working from home. For some of us who needed the peace and quiet of not working in an office, working from home is a blessing in disguise. For others who crave human interaction and haven’t had much of that for the past few weeks, working from home can be a struggle. Regardless of which side of the aisle you’re on, the WIFA Emerging Talents team has developed a limited “Virtual Lunch Series” to provide you with a virtual space outside of the work environment for dialogue and networking.

The objective of the series is threefold:
1. Maintain and build connections with our Emerging Talents members
2. Provide a virtual space for members to meet and talk outside of work (substituting for in person social gatherings)
3. Provide constructive content to members on how to navigate around the personal and professional obstacles during these unusual times

The series will launch this Friday April 17th from 12:00 - 13:00. The first discussion topic will be "Tips on Working from Home," moderated by Jodi Schneider, Senior International Editor from Bloomberg News

WiFA Thought Leadership Corner
Q1 2020 in Review
Q1 2020 in Review
As we look back on the first quarter of 2020, it will be mostly remembered for the coronavirus pandemic and its unprecedented impact on our communities and financial markets globally. However, even in these turbulent times, it’s important to continue acknowledging and feeling grateful for everything we’ve accomplished since the start of the year.

The WiFA Thought Leadership brings ideas to action and supports women by working together with government organisations and key stakeholders to empower them through appropriate policy changes. WiFA petition the government – specifically the Secretary for Labour and Welfare - to establish family-friendly working arrangements in light of the Covid-19 outbreak in Hong Kong.

We celebrated #IWD not only featuring 50 amazing Women in Finance Asia through the WiFA Spotlight Series, but also partnering with WE (Women in Exchange Traded Funds) across a series of events. For instance, for the sixth consecutive year we worked together with 101 exchanges around the world to ring the opening or closing bells on Sunday, 8 March 2020.

All the events - which started on Monday, 2 March and lasted for three weeks – were organized in partnership between the IFC, Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) Initiative, UN Global Compact, UN Women, the World Federation of Exchangesand Women in ETFs to raise awareness about the business case for women’s economic empowerment, and the opportunities for the private sector to advance gender equality and sustainable development. As expected, we had to scale down the number of events or promote them via social media only due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Right at home, HKEX rolled-out a week-long, multi-channelled campaign to bring the spirit of diversity and gender equality across our workplace and communities in celebration of International Women’s Day 2020. The campaign included the “Ring the Bell for Gender Equality” event in collaboration with the global partners, a series of short videos featuring some of their inspiring women colleagues, and a number of social posts across HKEX’s channels.

In addition, the UN Women’s theme for International Women’s Day is ‘I am Generation Equality: Realising Women’s Rights’, marking the milestones that have been reached around the world. To name a few, it celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted in 1995 to advance the empowerment of women and girls worldwide. Furthermore, 2020 marks a five-year milestone towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals; the 20th anniversary of the UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security; and the 10th anniversary of UN Women’s establishment.

Leadership in WE notes: “The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day – ‘I am Generation Equality’ - celebrates the progress that has been made all around the world in advancing gender equality. At Women in ETFs, we are proud to say that we have been proactive in promoting gender equality for some time now, as evidenced by our educational and professional development events, mentorship and university outreach programs and the speakers bureau, and our chapters around the world active participation in the annual ‘Ring the Bell for Gender Equality’ initiative. There is further to go before we achieve gender equality, but today marks the start of a month of important awareness and work to continue to build towards that important goal.”

As we move into the second quarter, whether it be working from home or in the office, we are here to help and support you. If there is anything you need, please reach out to Rebecca Sin.

Responding to COVID-19 together
Keeping up with the routines and adopting the new norm
Keeping up with the routines and adopting the new norm
It is hard to avoid spending a few hours online each day trawling through the news about COVID-19 and discussing possible outcomes. This information overload is part of dealing with the anxiety of our times. COVID-19 is arguably one of the biggest crises on a global level, and our thoughts continue to be with the people affected and the health professionals working around the clock to help those most in need.
At WiFA, we are working to do our part by ensuring the safety of our Team and our Members. For the past few months, we are conducting dry runs on different online meeting tools to bring our sessions to you virtually. The Steering Committee met to craft exciting new events, revamping existing programmes with the focus to help our members engage with each other while remaining remote. We will also be sharing information about ways members can support in the coming weeks. Please reach out to Bonnie Ohri, WiFA Executive Director with interests.
On a separate note, Benedicte Nolens and Bonnie So have taken the reins from Aoife McGillion and Kate Reid to be the co-Chairs for WiFA from January 2020. We would like to take this opportunity to introduce the 2020 committees and co-Chairs:
As many of you are aware, Jo Allum, WiFA Administrator, is moving back to the UK this summer. When her roles and responsibilities were reviewed, we knew that it was impossible to hire someone to replace her. So we restructured her responsibilities and divided up the work among several WiFA leads. We are delighted to identify Bonnie Ohri, WiFA Executive Director to provide oversight. She will work closely with the new WiFA leads who will support the organisation, corporate sponsors, and members:
Please join us in congratulating these wonderful women in their new roles. They are dedicating their time to contribute to WiFA on a pro bono basis. We wish Aoife McGillion, Kate Reid, and Jo Allum all the very best in their new roles. They will continue their support as Chairman Emeritus for WiFA and as members of the organisation.
Meanwhile WiFA will continue to monitor and assess the COVID-19 situation constantly and continue to react quickly and effectively. We hope you and your loved ones stay safe and healthy during these unprecedented times.

WiFA Support
A quick update from HER Fund
A quick update from HER Fund
WiFA works with HER Fund to provide a helping hand to Hong Kong's most neglected women and girls. Founded in 2004, HER Fund provides capacity-building, leadership training, and small grants to grassroots organizations led by and serving the city's most disadvantaged. HER Fund is also committed to enhancing the visibility of marginalized women and girls and the challenges they face. The organization's four focus areas are:
  • Freedom from Discrimination
  • Poverty
  • Violence
  • Promote Women's Civil Participation
COVID-19 has not stopped HER Fund from their fight against gender inequality but it has forced them to restrategize their engagement with grantees. In the past few months, HER Fund has started using online meeting tools to conduct workshops and connect with community partners in order to better understand grassroots needs during this time. These meetings have further inspired grantees to employ different tools in order to creatively sustain outreach with their respective communities.
HER Fund is excited to partner with WiFA to bring network members closer to marginalized community leaders and issues. Please visit their website to learn more about HER Fund's mission and impact. WiFA Philanthropy will also be sharing information about ways members can support in the coming weeks. Please reach out to Penny Barsha or Karen Liu with interest.
