Celebrating International Women’s Day with #BreakTheBias
While every day is a great opportunity to celebrate the women in our lives, International Women’s Day gives us one more reason to do exactly that – to recognise the abundance of achievements of women in social, economy, cultural and political. The day also provides an opportunity for us to reflect on the status of women’s issues and gender equality, by surveying how far we have come and how much more collective action is required.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #BreakTheBias where it is a stark reminder that we still live in a world yet free from inequality, bias, stereotypes and discrimination. Bias is a disproportionate weight in favour for or against an idea or thing, usually in a way that is closed-minded, prejudicial, or unfair. Easily distinguished into two types – conscious and unconscious bias, the former has been a damaging social issue for some time whilst the latter is probably the most common form of discrimination. Hence, by having conversations or highlighting such a state of bias will lead to realisation, awareness and understanding of the negative repercussions of it – collectively, we can all #BreakTheBias.

And the Chamber would like to play a part supporting #BreakTheBias campaign with our own social media campaign in conjunction with International Women’s Day 2022. We are calling on our members and anyone in our network to collectively participate by sending us an image of yourselves (or alongside others!) posing with your arms crossed to signify a commitment to #BreakTheBias and any relevant quotes that are fitting to the theme. Submissions can be made here.

In addition, save the date for 31 March 2022 (2.30 pm - 4.30 pm) – where the BMCC, in collaboration with British Council Malaysia will be organising an International Women’s Day #BreakTheBias event with a theme of “Empowering Women in STEM”. The event will look to recognise the role of women in science – not only as beneficiaries but as agents of change with a crucial contribution to economic development as well as societal progress. Watch this space for more information on this upcoming exciting event.

Happy International Women’s Day 2022 to the strong, intelligent, wonderful and talented women in our BMCC network!
