Realigning Health and Wellbeing Priorities

As the focus now shifts towards post-Covid-19 recovery, it is instrumental for us to realign health and wellbeing priorities towards enhancing and ensuring resilience. The pandemic has highlighted our interdependence – with economic and social impacts affecting a country’s gross domestic product (GDP), bare stark weaknesses in the health care system and how society was hit with a disproportionate burden of infection, with reversal of the development gains we had a few years ago.

Imperatively the BMCC believes that in order to achieve a new normal - requires a coordinated, coherent and cohesive approach towards health and well-being. For that, the BMCC has taken an inclusive effort to kickstart the conversation on realigning health priorities through exclusive webinars with prominent individuals in the healthcare industry.

In terms of a collective approach to dealing with the pandemic, Malaysia has done a fairly good job in coming together as a nation, as stated by Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the Director General of Health Malaysia at the exclusive briefing of BMCC Government Dialogue Series entitled “Covid-19: Two Years on”. He elaborated that the nation has seen an impressive vaccination rate which has resulted in less severe implications and prevents hospitalisation or life risks within the communities – which subsequently has reduced the burden on the healthcare system, who can now focus on ensuring an adequate, efficient response to critical cases.

Further to that, Malaysia will undertake a medium to long-term reform of its healthcare system to ensure accessibility and coverage for the population – as stated by Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz in October last year. In agreement that there needs to be more spending on public healthcare, he also emphasised on the need for a policy shift towards incentivising health insurance and social protection schemes – an initiative which looks to improve the preparedness and capacity needs for any future shortcomings. As underlined by the World Bank, the post-pandemic period offers a once-in-a-generation chance for structural health-system change to deliver a robust healthcare for all through reforms and reassessments of priorities.

The need for realignment of health priorities is not only limited to the country level though, as shared by Jonathan L. Pan, the Vice President & General Manager of GSK Pharmaceuticals Malaysia at the BMCC CEO Insights Series entitled “Making Health a Priority” – the focus also includes taking into account the perspective of a company and an individual. He believes that companies can continue to thrive by adopting a positive approach to employee wellbeing through sharing of healthy habits and offering support.

The BMCC will look to continue highlighting the importance of health and well-being as the nation moves towards endemicity and would like to call upon distinguished members to share on their respective feedbacks on the matter. To be in touch, send your ideas and thoughts to info@bmcc.org.my
