The UK and Malaysia Ink New Partnership on Climate Action

The United Kingdom and Malaysia have signed a new memorandum of understanding to strengthen climate action cooperation. The ‘UK-Malaysia memorandum of understanding 2022’ establishes a framework for both countries to collaborate on climate and biodiversity issues, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the sharing of knowledge and technical expertise. It will also encourage scientific and technical collaboration, private sector participation and outreach activities.

Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Minister for the Pacific and International Environment, Lord Zac Goldsmith, signed the new Partnership with Malaysian Minister of Environment and Water, Dato' Sri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

The Partnership covers 5 main areas:
  • Collaboration on climate and biodiversity issues
  • Knowledge sharing
  • Promoting scientific and technical collaboration
  • Supporting private sector involvement
  • Promoting outreach activities

According to Lord Zac Goldsmith, combating climate change and biodiversity loss requires commitment and collaboration.

"The UK-Malaysia Climate Partnership marks an important step in building on the progress made at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), and will further deepen the strong ties and knowledge-sharing between our countries to address this global challenge.

"Malaysia has taken significant action on clean growth, sustainable urbanisation, green finance, forest and biodiversity protection, supply chains and carbon markets, and by continuing to share our experiences and expertise we can work together to limit carbon emissions and protect precious natural ecosystems."

The UK is delivering several projects in Malaysia “which are contributing in practical ways”, including strengthening nature-based solutions in the state of Terengganu, supporting low carbon city planning in Iskandar, promoting renewable energy in off-grid villages in Sabah and mobilising green finance by working with Malaysian financial institutions, including Bank Negara Malaysia.

At COP26, the UK also announced new support to Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia. The £110 million ASEAN Catalytic Green Finance Facility will support new sustainable infrastructure projects and the £274 million fund, under the UK Climate Action for a Resilient Asia (CARA) programme, will strengthen climate adaptation across the Indo-Pacific.

BMCC aims to continue advocating for collaborative actions between government and businesses to address the challenges at hand in transitioning towards a net zero economy. The Chamber is constantly looking to extend the BMCC Climate Action Pledge to more organisations. Since we launched the Pledge, it had garnered 29 pledge signatories joining the cause. GSK Malaysia | Launches #GiveBack Campaign
Congratulations to our Sterling member on the successful launch of the #GiveBack recycling campaign, which focuses on the safe and responsible disposal of old and used inhalers. GSK Malaysia is committed to its long-term ambition of delivering net zero emissions across all operations by 2030.

#GiveBack is held through collaborative working with over 50 outlets of Big Pharmacy across the Klang Valley and Seremban, and will soon be extended to a nationwide campaign. During this pilot phase of the campaign, patients are encouraged to drop off their used, unwanted or expired inhalers at participating pharmacies to help reduce plastic waste and the adverse effects that the propellant has on the environment.

In a next phase of the campaign, GSK Malaysia is looking into the feasibility of having the collected inhalers recycled into materials that can be repurposed, such as materials for local artists to create art installations. GSK Malaysia is keen on collaborating with many social enterprises that share similar ESG values.

Jonathan Pan, Vice President & GM of GSK Malaysia said:

"The programme has already been conducted in the UK and will help pave the way for a more environmentally sustainable treatment of respiratory diseases in Malaysia. By 2030, we hope to create an impact that results in major savings in terms of material waste and carbon emissions."

IPSOS | Earth Day 2022: Public Opinion on Climate Change
In our fast-changing world, the need for trustworthy information to make sound decisions has never been greater. Ipsos believes that clients require more than just a data supplier, they require a partner who can generate accurate and relevant information and turn it into actionable truth.

Despite not being the top concern for the public, concern about climate change remains. The public are concerned about the impacts of climate change at home (68%) and abroad (70%). Yet, there is a lack of faith that we have the necessary plans in place and will make significant progress in tackling climate change in this next decisive decade. Only a quarter (27%) said they had heard of COP26, and of those only around half (52%) said they had heard about the commitments that countries had made.
