2021 in Review – 4th BMCC Annual General Meeting 2022
image
The British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) conducted our 4th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 29 June 2022 at J W Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The AGM was attended by 60 members of BMCC.

The AGM began with an official opening by Chairman, Abrar A. Anwar who is the Managing Director, and Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia. He presented an overview of the Chamber’s performance in 2021.

“Throughout 2021, we continued to focus on our engagement with our members digitally. However, at the same time, we started to plan for events that can be organised face-to-face in anticipation of the relaxation of the Movement Control Orders and easing of COVID-19 standard operating procedures by the government. Overall, we organised a total of 48 events, with 45 being organised digitally,” he said.

The BMCC successfully retained our membership strength in 2021 as we welcomed 27 new corporate members and retained 85% of our existing members, compared to 82% in 2020.

Although last year remained challenging due to the on-going pandemic, Abrar said the Chamber's high retention rate of members can be attributed to the extensive value provided to our members in supporting their business needs and growth.

“We continuously served our members by delivering the right value propositions guided by our four pillars of service namely business-to-business networking, creating branding and profiling platforms for members, bilateral trade services and being a collective industry voice,” he added.

Following the AGM, Mark Arthun, Managing Director and Site Leader of Smith & Nephew Operations Sdn Bhd, was elected as the new Chairman of BMCC effective 29 June 2022.

Mark succeeded Abrar, who stepped down as Chairman of the BMCC after the completion of a two-year term. Abrar will remain as a member of the Board to support the growth of the Chamber. The BMCC thanks Abrar for his stellar leadership and contributions as the Chairman and welcomes Mark as the new Chairman of the BMCC.

Ministry of Finance Malaysia | S&P Global Ratings Revised
S&P Global Ratings have revised Malaysia’s sovereign credit ratings outlook from Negative to Stable. This comes after the S&P report recognised that ‘Malaysia’s steady growth momentum and strong external position will remain in place over the next two years'. The country’s GDP has since been expected to grow by 6.1% in 2022 and 5.0% in 2023, given the first-quarter growth of 5%. S&P’s forecast is also in line with the Government’s expectation of higher growth in subsequent quarters as well as Bank Negara Malaysia’s estimate between 5.3 to 6.3%.

Moving forward, the nation’s priorities for improving long-term economic prospects will be digitalisation, technological adoption, and ESG or sustainability-related areas. These will be pursued in tandem with the Government’s commitment to medium-term structural reforms to attract higher investment and skilled, well-paying jobs, all of which will begin with Budget 2023. This is done alongside the government’s enactment of the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA), which is expected to be tabled by the end of this year.

The press release from the Minister of Finance can be viewed here.

It is also in line with Malaysia’s pledge at the 25th ASEAN Labour Minister Meeting 2018 and Environmental Sustainability Plan 2020-2030 to create as many as 230,000 green jobs by 2030.
