A Celebration of Sporting and Business Excellence at Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games
image
Let the Games begin! The city of Birmingham in the UK is the centre of attention as it hosts the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games from 28 July to 8 August 2022. Visitors, spectators and viewers will get a taste of what Global Britain has to offer to the world with a showcase of the region's strengths in both sporting and business excellence. In addition to Birmingham’s ability to host multi-sports events such as the Commonwealth Games, this is also an opportunity for businesses to demonstrate its capabilities and innovations across various themes and industries.

Throughout the duration of Games, the UK government will host a series of events to bring together businesses and governments to discover opportunities for partnership and innovations for sustainable growth through the Commonwealth Games Business and Tourism Programme (BATP) under the UK House platform. This unique programme, which runs alongside a major sporting event, is hoped to facilitate business connectivity between UK enterprises, and international buyers and investors.

The UK House will focus on opportunities in 7 sectors on different days, namely Food and Drink, Education, Data-Driven Healthcare, Sports Economy, Creative and Digital Technologies, Future Mobility and Tourism. The UK House is also hosting the Commonwealth Business Forum where world class business leaders from the 54 countries of the Commonwealth will gather to discuss green investment opportunities, broker future business relationships and discuss how to mutually support each other in the cooperative spirit of the Commonwealth Games and the UK’s climate ambitions to transition to net zero.

Delegates can find out more or attend, either in person at The Exchange in Birmingham or join the programme online at www.ukhouse2022.co.uk.

Recap on BMCC, JACTIM and ABAC Talk on the Corporate Liability Provision under Section 17A MACC Act 2009
image
The British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) and Japanese Chamber of Trade & Industry, Malaysia (JACTIM) have recently co-organised a talk titled "Section 17A MACC Act 2009: Ignorance of the law is not an excuse" in partnership with Anti-Bribery Anti-Corruption (ABAC) Center of Excellence Sdn Bhd.

During the talk, Suhaimi Saad, Certified Lead Auditor and Training Specialist of ABAC, shared that it was "not business as usual" with the enforcement since 1 June 2020 of the corporate liability provision involving commercial organisations under Section 17A of the MACC Act 2009.

With the provision under the Act, a commercial organisation is liable to punishment if any of its employees and/or associates commit corruption for the benefit of the organisation. The commercial organisation is also considered guilty, whether or not, the upper management or its representatives know about the corruption acts committed by its employees of associates.

We would like to thank JACTIM and ABAC for collaborating with BMCC to organise this informative session. Thanks to everyone who participated in the talk and lets practise zero tolerance on bribery and corruption.

BMCC E-Newsletter Green Edition | Leadership in Action: Inspiring Solutions
Launched in February 2021, the Green edition is published as the last weekly e-newsletter of each month, sharing only content related to sustainability, green initiatives, and ESG. The Green edition features Leadership in Action: Inspiring Solutions section with Take 5: Q&A with leaders of our member companies.

Take 5 – offers an insider’s look into our respective members’ Green agenda and how their organisations are implementing various initiatives, activities and commitments that are both environment-friendly and sustainable. Featuring prominent members’ CEOs, the interview aims to highlight industry champions and key opinion leaders to further push the Green narrative as a sustainable aspect of any business operation.

A year down the road, we have had the privilege to interview and feature more than 10 members’ CEOs from prestigious organisations such as Standard Chartered, HSBC, PwC, and Smith + Nephew to name a few - these are well-known organisations that are leading the Green curve in terms of initiatives and implementation.

For example, Shell Malaysia has installed solar panels on rooftops of over 150 retail stations and is using wind and solar energy to power their offshore projects. The University of Nottingham emphasises student initiatives to reduce single-use plastics and encourage sustainable eating and reduce food waste. HSBC is at the forefront of sustainable finance with Green bonds and sustainability sukuks.

We would like to call upon any interested members to participate in this interview and join us in our journey to share best practices, support and influence more organisations to combat climate change. Interested members can enquire at comms@bmcc.org.my.
