Virtual Trade Mission to Malaysia
image
The healthcare and life sciences sector in Malaysia has become increasingly important post-COVID-19. The Malaysian government remains committed to strengthen the country's preparedness in healthcare and life sciences over the next decade, particularly modernising healthcare infrastructure and vaccine production to face possible pandemics in the future. Such commitment as well as on-going discussion and efforts on preventive healthcare are critical to establish a strong and resilient healthcare system and security.

The public and private healthcare sectors are investing significantly in health innovation, medical devices and digital health in the next 10 years to ensure Malaysia maintains its competitive edge in delivering world-class quality healthcare services.

The BMCC in collaboration with Kent County Council, UK is organising a virtual trade mission from 18 to 30 September 2022 focusing on the healthcare and life sciences sector. The delegation comprises 6 UK companies from the Kent & Medway, East Sussex, Essex and South Essex regions.

Click  for a full list of UK delegates. For organisations that are interested to have a one-on-one virtual meeting with the delegates, please get in touch with .

PM Launches National Biotechnology Policy 2.0 with Healthcare Security in Mind
The National Biotechnology Policy 2.0 launched by the government will focus on three main thrusts towards empowering the sector, in line with Malaysia’s aspiration to be a high-technology country by 2030. Prime Minister Dato' Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the three main thrusts are agricultural biotechnology and food security, healthcare and well-being, and biotechnology in industrialisation and circular economy.

Biotechnology plays a pivotal role in managing communicable and non-communicable diseases in the nation’s healthcare security. Ismail Sabri said the policy would boost the existing biotech ecosystem and dealing with the country's challenges related to food security, pandemic management and the climate change issues with local biotech solutions. Meanwhile, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Dato' Sri Dr Adham Baba stated that the initiatives to support local biotech companies would be expanded to include health and industry as well as agriculture biotech, which was introduced in the first policy in 2005.

National Energy Policy 2022-2040 Launched as a New Narrative for Energy Transition
National Energy Policy (NEP) 2022-2040 was launched by Prime Minister Dato' Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on 19 September 2022. NEP aims to improve economic resilience and ensure energy recovery while achieving equality and universal access as well as ensuring environmental sustainability. This includes energy-based hydrocarbons and renewable energy sources. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Dato' Sri Mustapa Mohamed said the policy was formulated in accordance with efforts to optimise economic prospects concurrent with the rapidly expanding megatrend of energy transition.

The NEP will help the country achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in 2050, as it faces the challenges of energy transition and climate change.

The aspiration has nine targets to be achieved by 2040, among them being shared mode of public transport of 50%, use of electric vehicles (EVs) of 38%, use of the B30 mixed fuel for heavy vehicles as an alternative fuel, as well as energy savings of 11% for industry and commercial use, and 10% for residential use. This will provide opportunities for industry players in the energy transition space to be involved in these various initiatives under the NEP.
