We were finally able to return to some semblance of normalcy in 2022. After 2 years of COVID-19 movement control orders, the BMCC has done extensive work and made it a top priority to recover in the interest of our members. The Chamber had quite a busy year, as we hosted 49 events and various other programmes and activities to benefit our members and the business network.
Some of the key highlights from 2022: - The return of the BMCC Business Excellence Awards with an attendance of 450 guests at the awards night to celebrate and recognise UK-Malaysia Business Excellence and Partnerships.
- Collaboration with the Public Services Department of Malaysia for the 23rd JPA-BMCC Management Development Programme for senior Malaysia government officers.
- 2nd Malaysia Climate Action Week with the theme “ACT Now! Adapt, Collaborate and Transcend”, offering 5 days of programmes and activities to inspire more companies to take action against climate change.
- The BMCC in partnership with Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia hosted the Inspiring Women Entrepreneur Conference & Exhibition The half day conference was very well received with a turnout of 150 participants.
- 2 virtual and 1 virtual trade missions from the UK.
- Inaugural networking event in Penang.

| BMCC Annual Corporate Christmas Luncheon. |
|
|
|
After much buildup and expectation, the highly anticipated Annual Corporate Christmas Luncheon took place on 9 December. The party was full of the happy, exuberant energy of the guests as everyone was already in the Christmas spirit. H.E. Charles Hay MVO, UK High Commissioner to Malaysia, contributed to the jovial spirit of Christmas with his Christmas Toast, which members of the BMCC Board of Directors joined. |

Royal Selangor, The Body Shop, Lush, Halcyon Days, Elemis, Truefitt and Hill, Natural Looks, and Desa Heritage were among the companies that displayed their wares at the small Christmas market set up for our guests to do some last-minute present shopping. Guests were also surprised with lucky draws with prizes sponsored by our Members, the Four Seasons Hotel KL, JW Marriott KL, Sunway Resorts Hotel, Bluestar AMG, and Malaysia Airlines.
BMCC also organised a Christmas donation drive in collaboration with the Lost Food Project as part of our celebration of the month of giving. The Lost Food Project collected a mountain of food donations, all of which would be distributed to needy families and organisations. We are appreciative of the contributions, and we commend our guests for their thoughtfulness in giving them.
We appreciate everyone who attended this year's BMCC Annual Corporate Christmas event and hope to see even more of you next year!

BMCC joyfully celebrated Christmas with our Members and friends in the Pearl of Orient, bringing our Christmas cheer to the beautiful State of Penang.
The evening was filled with laughter and joy, and it made us incredibly happy to see that our guests were having a good time. We would also like to thank International SOS for being our Corporate Sponsor.

| UNGC Sustainability Celebrations Night – Congratulations to our Members |
|

Two of our Sterling members - Jentayu Sustainables Berhad and Smith & Nephew Operations Sdn Bhd were recently awarded by the United Nations Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei (UNGCMYB) during their annual Sustainability Celebration Night. |

Jentayu Sustainables Berhad was awarded the Sustainability Awareness and Employee Engagement Recognition, and the award was received by Jentayu’s Chief Executive Officer, Jeefri Muhamad Yusup.

Smith & Nephew Operations Sdn Bhd received two awards and the company was represented by Mark Arthun, Smith & Nephew’s Managing Director and Site Leader.

| BMCC Visit to Clarivate (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd |
|
|
|
The BMCC team had the opportunity to visit one of our members in Penang, Clarivate (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. Clarivate assists customers in locating, protecting, and commercialising their inventions by utilising the company's reliable subscription and technology-based solutions along with extensive domain expertise.
The BMCC's team, which included our CEO, Jennifer Lopez; Senior Manager Membership & Strategic Partnerships, Roufizah Razali; and Shaayla Jayabhalan, Manager, Business Development (Membership), were delighted to have this opportunity to visit them on-site. They were welcomed by Shaun Lee Ching Weun, who is Clarivate's Senior Director and Penang Site Lead.

| Stonyhurst International School Grand Opening. |
|
|
|
Stonyhurst International School had its grand opening in Penang on 16 December. The 4.3-acre campus features 21st-century teaching and learning facilities. With over 300 students from over 24 countries, the school's cultural diversity adds to its richness and global outlook.
The grand opening of the school was officiated by the Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak with presence of the Chief Minister of Penang, The Right Honourable Chow Kon Yeow, Stonyhurst College, UK headmaster John Browne and Stonyhurst International School principal Justin Thomas Durling.
The BMCC was represented by BMCC’s Chair, Mark Arthun; CEO, Jennifer Lopez; Senior Manager Membership & Strategic Partnerships, Roufizah Razali and Shaayla Jayabhalan, Manager, Business Development (Membership). Richard Colley, Country Director- Trade and BMCC Board Member also joined the celebration with the BMCC Team.

| Malaysia Attracted RM193.7 Billion of Approved Investments in January – September 2022. |

Malaysia continues to be a top investment destination among global investors and a hub for commercial expansion. As the new premier leadership is focused on bolstering the country's economic growth and maintaining Malaysia's reputation as a reliable investment destination, investors continue to invest in Malaysia with confidence. From January to September 2022, Malaysia attracted RM193.7 billion in approved investments in the services, manufacturing, and primary sectors including 2,786 projects, which are estimated to generate 98,414 new jobs. This is a 2.5% increase over the RM188.9 billion in investments that were approved during the same period the previous year.
FDI remained the major contributor, at 67.5% or RM130.7 billion while DDI contributed 32.5% (RM63 billion). Compared to the FDI approved over the same period in 2021, this represents a 15% increase. Five states that have recorded significant approved investments include Johor (RM63.9 billion), Kuala Lumpur (RM26.1 billion), Selangor (RM25.7 billion), Sarawak (RM17.6 billion) and Kedah (RM12.1 billion).
Minister of International Trade and Industry, Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said the country’s robust supply chain network, competitive cost structure, simplified business processes, cutting-edge innovation and technology capabilities, and good talent base are the important elements in attracting investments and promoting the sustainable growth.

| Medium Voltage and High Voltage Users Will Face Increase in Electricity Tariff from January 2023. |

Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced that the government will allocate RM10.76 billion to subsidise electricity tariffs for Malaysians. However, under the Imbalanced Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism, medium voltage (MV) and high voltage (HV) users among industry participants, including multinational corporations (MNCs), will still face a surcharge of 20 sen/kWj starting 1 January 2023 due to the increase of fuel cost required for power generation, after subsidies by the government. These users will be paying a surcharge of 20 sen/kWj instead of the full 27 sen/kWj.
In addition to that, the government has agreed that all domestic users will not incur any tariff increase and at the same time, lower voltage (LV) non-domestic users which include micro businesses, small and medium enterprises including restaurants, groceries, bakeries, small workshops and such will not be facing any electricity tariff increase as well. For these categories of users, the government allocates RM8.74 billion in subsidies. To ensure that there is no increase in prices of food and agricultural products, users as such farmers and animal breeders which is categorised as specific agriculture (tariff H) will also not incur any electricity tariff increase.

BMP Technologies Recognised with Dyson Quality Award.
BMP Worldwide is a wholly owned subsidiary of Andrew Industries Ltd (UK) founded in 1894, a privately-owned industrial manufacturing group with plants in UK, China, America, Mexico and Malaysia. BMP’s core competency is sub-assembly for filtration-applications and digital printing, offering both contract assembly and re-manufacturing services on a wide variety of OEM products.
BMP Technologies Malaysia Sdn Bhd established in 2013 in Kulai (Johor) is a key supplier to Dyson. BMP produces high performance filter-assemblies for Dyson’s wide premium range of vacuum cleaners, air purifiers and hairdryers. Last month BMP won the Dyson Supplier Award for Quality in recognition of their consistent quality performance and support. BMP achieved 2 years in a row full score for quality which is a solid performance.
BMP’s Managing Director Jonas Noecker shares that BMP also supplies the automotive industry with cabin air filters (Proton) as well as equipment filters to the medical industry. BMP is currently expanding their existing facility by building a 2nd plant doubling their built-up area and headcount.
