MITI Ready to Assists Industries & Exporters Gain Advantages of CPTPP.
The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) is ready to help and support Malaysian industries and exporters and ensure that they benefit from the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) which took effect on 29 November 2022 for Malaysia.

Malaysia became a party to the CPTPP free trade agreement (FTA) on 29 November, which has a broad scope that covers traditional market access areas as well as concerns with labour, the environment, state-owned enterprises, government procurement, intellectual property, electronic commerce, and small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs).

MITI in a statement stated that Malaysia would benefit from preferential duty rates for goods that are exported and imported to 8 CPTPP member countries and among the advantages are as follows:

i. Full duty-free treatment to all Malaysian exports entering Singapore and Australia.
ii. Duty-free treatment on 96 per cent of our exports and tariff lines to New Zealand presently, which is set to increase to 100 per cent by 2024. Notably, Malaysian products across all sectors can enter the New Zealand market at zero duty, except for products such as textiles and processed wood which will become duty-free by 2024.
iii. Malaysian exports to Japan are subject to duty-free treatment for 86 per cent of tariff lines, which will increase to 100 per cent by 2038.
iv. Duty-free treatment for 88 per cent of Malaysian tariff lines to Vietnam, set to be at 100 per cent by 2033.

Malaysian companies must acquire a Certificate of Origin (CO) from MITI in order to enjoy CPTPP preferential tariffs. For more information on electronic applications for CO, please visit MITI's official portal at https://fta.miti.gov.my/index.php/pages/view/7.
