Malaysia’s Trade Performance for 2022 Showed Fastest Growth, According to MITI.
Malaysia's trade soared to unprecedented rises in 2022, establishing a new record for trade, exports, and imports. This is a favourable indication that the nation's trade performance is on an upward track, bolstered by robust commodity prices and rising external demand. Trade reached RM2 trillion for the second year in a row and saw its fastest growth since 1994. Exports surpassed the 2025 prediction for the Twelfth Malaysia Plan by 24%, three years earlier than the objective, reaching RM1.552 trillion. Meanwhile, imports reached a new record by going above RM1 trillion for the first time. For the 25th year running since 1998, a trade surplus was recorded.

Exports from the manufacturing, agriculture and mining sectors registered an all-time high with double-digit growth. This resilient growth was driven by robust exports of electrical and electronic (E&E) products, petroleum products, liquefied natural gas (LNG), palm oil and palm oil-based agriculture products, crude petroleum as well as machinery, equipment and parts with each product recording more than RM10 billion increase with double-digit growth. All these products also posted the highest export value ever except crude petroleum.

Hiring of Foreign Workers in Five Critical Sectors will be Speed Up.
Minister of Human Resources, V. Sivakumar stated that the government is implementing a plan to make it easier and faster to employ foreign workers in five important industries and sub-sectors. The manufacturing, construction, plantation, agricultural, and services (restaurants only) sectors and sub-sectors are included in the reduction of requirements for hiring foreign workers, according to Sivakumar. Employers in these five sectors can now submit applications to hire foreign workers using the Foreign Worker Centralized Management System (FWCMS) portal under the FWe Approval Module.

Within three working days after the day the applications are received, the Ministry of Human Resources will process and approve applications for hiring foreign workers. For their applications to be considered under the plan, he advised employers to submit new applications through FWe Approval Module, for those who had submitted on the platform before 17 January.

Any further inquiries can be directed to the Migrant Worker Management Division of the Ministry of Human Resources at (03) 8885 2939/2940.
