BMCC Pledged Trees for Sabah's Forest Restoration.
image
In partnership with the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, the BMCC coordinated a tree-planting initiative, the Queen’s Green Canopy in conjunction with our Malaysia Climate Action Week 2022 held in October 2022. We are pleased to inform that one of our tree-planting partners, Animal Projects and Environmental Education Sdn Bhd (APE Malaysia), has successfully planted over 140 trees out of the approximately 1000 trees pledged!

The trees have been planted at the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary. Some of the species planted include Bangkal (Neonauclea subdita), Simpoh Laki (Dillenia excelsa), Obah Jangkang (Eugenia cerassiformis) and Apid Apid (Exoecaria indica).

The team at APE Malaysia will be responsible for the upkeep of these trees for a period of four years. In five years, these trees will reach a height of five metres; in less than ten years, they will converge with the other trees to form the forest canopy. We are thrilled to know that the trees that we pledged will quickly become a new home for the animals at the Sanctuary. We hope this will become a great start to the reforestation efforts and combat the current climate issues.

We would like to thank all our tree planting pledgers to date – HSBC, BP, Reckitt, Institute of Chartered Accountant of England & Wales (ICAEW), YTL Group, British Standards Institute, Press Metal Aluminium Holdings, University of Nottingham Malaysia and AstraZeneca! The APE team is in the process of planting more trees in the Sanctuary, and we can only imagine how amazing it would be to have more trees for the wildlife there.

To keep the momentum going and reach our goals of creating a more sustainable and greener nation, and supporting Malaysia’s 100 million tree-planting campaign, the BMCC encourages our members and partners to come forward and pledge with our tree-planting partners . We also call on our members and partners to join us in this year’s Malaysia Climate Action Week. For more information, please contact

The Alice Smith Schools Association | Sustainable Fashion.
The Alice Smith Schools Association has taken the initiative to promote the recycling of used clothing items as part of their efforts to raise awareness of the importance of recycling and protecting the environment. Our landfills are overflowing with textile waste as fast fashion has grown in popularity and accessibility. Textile waste is harmful to the environment as it typically takes years to degrade, which causes greater environmental impact.

Recycling pre-loved clothing and embracing sustainable fashion can help to tackle the problem, and the BMCC praises the Alice Smith Schools Association for initiating this remarkable program. Partnering with KlothCares, the KLOTH Care Bin is located at both of the Alice Smith Schools' campuses in Jalan Bellamy and Jalan Equine, where you may donate your recycled used clothing. KlothCares is Malaysia’s first fabric recycling movement establishment with more than 300 recycling partners.

BMW Group Malaysia | MoU to Recycle Used Oil.
As part of their RE:GENERATE programme, BMW Group Malaysia has partnered with a local sustainable solutions provider, Pentas Flora Sdn Bhd, to integrate circularity throughout the company. The partnership is an essential first step in guaranteeing efficient management of automotive waste. Since the initiative's inception in 2021, participating BMW dealerships in the Klang Valley have donated approximately 30, 000 litres of used oil and lubricants for collection. These items were delivered to Pentas Flora's re-refinery facility in Banting, Selangor, for processing in order to be converted into re-refined eco-base oil (EBO).

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between BMW Malaysia and Pentas Flora, represented by the CEO of BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia, Matthias Schlesiger; Hans De Visser, BMW Managing Director; and Chai Heng Ng, the Technical Director of Pentas Flora.

The BMCC applauds BMW Malaysia for taking the lead in demonstrating its commitment to its goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

Green Energy will be Sarawak’s Main Agenda.
The state government of Sarawak will prioritise the promotion of green energy, in an effort to better conserve and protect the world's ozone layer. Premier of Sarawak Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that we must develop ways to cool the atmosphere because the earth's surface is warming. He said that exploring hydrogen as an alternate fuel source for energy is one method to address the problem. In mid of this month, the media reported that the Earth's ozone layer is on its way to recovery as discovered by a panel of international experts backed by the United Nations (UN). The ozone layer serves as a shield to protect the earth from the sun's ultraviolet radiation.

£30 million government funding for innovative projects to decarbonise UK highways.
To encourage innovation in the decarbonisation of roads, the UK Department of Transport is giving £30 million to 7 new regional projects across the UK. The initiatives aim to ensure that the use of cutting-edge technology and ideas can reduce emissions, increase regional connectivity, and hasten the transition to net-zero local roads. Future roads could be built using asphalt manufactured from green waste and "carbon-capturing" cement.

Seven separate initiatives were given around the UK, from Lanarkshire to Devon, through Live Labs 2: Decarbonising Local Roads Competition. The programme supports initiatives run by local highway authorities that are aimed at solving the long-term decarbonisation of highway infrastructure and modernising local governments' decarbonisation strategies for roadways. The development of a groundbreaking system approach to producing a net carbon-negative model for the delivery of green infrastructure is one of the objectives supported by the UK government. Through innovation pertaining to the decarbonisation of roads and investment, the government is also committed to generating high-quality, well-paying jobs throughout the UK.

UK government to support British industry in cutting fossil fuels.
Industries in the United Kingdom, such as building, mining, and quarrying, will receive a total of £32.5 million from the government to help them transition away from fossil fuels.

The grant, which was announced on January 20, is being provided through the second phase of the Red Diesel Replacement Competition and is intended to assist these industries in switching to alternative fuels. The UK's commitment to moving away from red diesel to help it reach its climate change and air quality targets will be supported by this second phase of funding, while also helping to lower industry emissions and energy costs.

Graham Stuart, UK's Minister of Energy and Climate Change, said that this is an effort to help speed up the decarbonisation of industry by giving industry and consumers effective low-carbon alternatives to red diesel and boosting green investment to make British industry more resilient in the future.
