BREAKING BARRIERS: Empowering Women and
Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Efforts

At BMCC, we support and promote the values of inclusivity and equality. We believe it is important to live in a world where everyone's differences are valued and celebrated.

Last week, we had the opportunity to get together with a few women leaders to discourse on #EmbracingEquity - the challenges faced by women both professionally and personally, and what the Chamber can do to help.

As women leaders, they too had their fair share of setbacks and struggles to get to where they are today. So, when asked for advice, here are some wise words they have to help future leaders strive to the top:

"Be strong minded and positive."

"Obstacles are just slight deviations from the original plan.
Take it as an opportunity to get back on track."

"Anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it."

In February, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) worked with leading panel provider FindOutNow to conduct a landmark survey of more than 4,100 respondents. The research found that two thirds of women feel they have missed out on career progression because of childcare responsibilities.

Let's all recognise the contributions of women to society and give them the support they need. Women, it is important for women to support women too! So, let's all be kind to aspiring women leaders and inspire them to rise up and speak up.

The efforts didn't stop there, we also had the inaugural Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Network meeting with industry representatives from all sectors to dialogue on the gaps organisations are facing and the sharing of best practices to help them grow and thrive, and to brave with empathy and compassion.

The Chamber is honoured to be a platform to advocate on creating a culture of belonging and equity for all. Promoting DEI requires a collective effort, therefore, we encourage individuals, organisations, governments, and civil society to work together to create a more equitable and inclusive society.

Did you know that equity for women is not only a societal issue, it's an economic one?

Several months ago, the British Chambers of Commerce set out to identify the moments in a woman’s life where she is forced to leave the workforce or falls behind in her career progression. Women of all ages are reluctantly leaving the labour force due to often unavoidable life events which impact their ability to continue their careers. The problem is not necessarily with the events themselves, but the lack of support available to women to allow them to continue with their working lives.

features an interesting and insightful view from over 300 organisations from 2017 to 2021, into how whistleblowing practices have evolved:
  • How do we make whistleblowing more accessible?
  • What is included as a disclosure and how has this definition changed?
  • What can whistleblowing tell us about building trust in the workplace?

While whistleblowing remains the single most effective countermeasure in dealing with workplace misconduct, other trends have made whistleblowing even more important in building trust.
