The State of Johor – The Southern Jewel of Malaysia
The BMCC was invited to the Invest Series: Unfolding States’ Business Potential – Johor programme, by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and the Johor State Government. This was a showcase of investment opportunities in the state of Johor. Johor’s total approved investments for 2022 reached an all-time high of RM70.6 billion, the highest in Malaysia. Since taking over the State Government last year, YAB Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, Chief Minister of Johor and his team, have doubled their efforts in improving the economic resilience. Concurrently, the state government is working on generating quality investments, securing more job opportunities, and putting in place the building blocks for a more dynamic, inclusive, and sustainable economy. |

The government is continuing their measures to guarantee a quick recovery of Johor’s economy while enhancing its capacity to face fresh difficulties from the shifting dynamics of the global economy. "There is a lot to be done still, and we must keep focused on the bigger picture and the longer game of creating a dynamic, inclusive, and sustainable economy for Johor and Malaysia.” said Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. The BMCC applauds the Johor State Government, Invest Johor, and contributing agencies in their efforts to attract investments and boost the economy of the nation. The Chamber is delighted to support and facilitate the Johor State Government and Invest Johor in their efforts to promote the state, and looks forward to future collaborations and programmes together with our members in Johor in the coming months. In the evening, the BMCC was invited by Invest Johor to attend the Hi-Tea Networking Event with YB Lee Ting Han, Chairman of Johor State Investment, Trade, and Consumer Affairs Committee. Together with YBrs. Puan Zarina Abdul Kadir, Chief Executive of Invest Johor at the event were BMCC's CEO, Jennifer Lopez; Public Affairs and Government Relations Senior Manager, Daniel Lee; and Business Development Manager (Membership), Shaayla Jayabhalan.
The networking event brought together various representatives from state and federal government departments and agencies and industry representatives who have been supportive to the economic development in Johor. | A Dinner with Andrew Patrick, UK's Global Envoy for Modern Slavery and Migration |

The BMCC was invited to dinner with Andrew Patrick, UK's Global Envoy for Modern Slavery and Migration by the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur. Andrew was in Malaysia to meet with the Malaysian government, civil society organisations, and industry players to discuss on issues and challenges faced in the forced labour.
Our members took the opportunity to share their views into issues on forced labour and modern slavery in Malaysia, as well as hear insights from the UK government on the matter. It was inspiring to hear our members share the actions and the measures taken within their organisations to address the issue, and their experience working with various stakeholders in this area. The BMCC were represented by members from PwC Malaysia, Smith & Nephew Malaysia, University of Nottingham Malaysia, and Weir Minerals Malaysia. |

| Expatriate Permit Application Procedure Simplified in Three Months |
|
|
|
The government is confident that in three months, it would be able to implement a quicker and easier application procedure for expatriate permits, following the first meeting of the Special Task Force to Facilitate Business (PEMUDAH), said Minister of Economy, Mohd Rafizi Ramli.
“We have decided to give ourselves three months today. Then, we will confidently implement the much less complicated application procedure,’’ said Rafizi. The current permit process which could take up to six months, have impacted businesses’ manpower planning.
Another important decision taken by PEMUDAH was to scale up the Academy in Factory (AiF) initiative, for which pilot projects have been operating for some time. One of the primary issues constantly voiced by investors and businesses is the necessity for government agencies to simplify, strengthen, and reduce the expatriate permission application procedure.
He also added that the decision to expand the AiF programme will assist the nation's economy to become less reliant on foreign labour and solve the problem of job mismatches. The AiF programme is a collaborative effort between industries, academia, and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry to improve national productivity.
