The Launch of Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap Part 1: Flagship Catalyst Projects and Initiatives |
|
Malaysia, a country committed to sustainable development, is embarking on a transformative journey to reshape its energy landscape. Recognising the need for a bold and forward-thinking approach, Malaysia aims to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and invest in clean, accessible, affordable, sustainable, and reliable alternative energy sources.
In pursuit of this vision, the Malaysian Government successfully launched Part 1 of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) on 27 July. This roadmap plays a critical role in guiding Malaysia through the complexities of a large-scale energy transition, facilitating the shift from a traditional fossil fuel-based economy to a high-value green economy.
The NETR is not merely a collection of interim measures to achieve Malaysia's Net Zero target; rather, it represents a paradigm shift in how the country views its economy, livelihoods, and global standing.
Part 1 of the NETR aims to capitalise on investment opportunities surpassing RM25 billion, generate 23,000 skilled and high-value job opportunities, and achieve a yearly reduction of 10,000 gigagrams of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. The NETR's strategic focus revolves around six key drivers of the energy transition, namely energy efficiency (EE), renewable energy (RE), hydrogen, bioenergy, green mobility, and carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS).
By consolidating integrated efforts, the NETR will open a new chapter in Malaysia's national development narrative, positioning the country as a regional leader in the energy transition.
The World Economic Forum (WEF) has also recently recognised Malaysia's potential by placing it first in Southeast Asia in the Energy Transition Index. This acknowledgement confirms the country's ability to attract global investment in renewable energy and green technology to drive the energy transition.
To learn more about the roadmap, the flagship catalyst projects, and more, you can download a copy here: NETR Part 1
Stay tuned for Part 2 of the NETR in the coming weeks, which will present a comprehensive set of action plans and initiatives aimed at catalysing investments and fostering economic activities in the sustainable energy sector. |
