Uncovering the Meaning Behind ESG Principles
What They Mean and How to Leverage Them For Business Growth

image
Recent global focus on sustainable development has become a cornerstone for organisations. This transformation is propelled by the acknowledgement of the pivotal role that Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices play in achieving enduring success and fostering positive impacts on the economy, environment, and society.

ESG factors are a set of non-financial metrics that are increasingly being used to assess the sustainability and long-term value of companies. This includes how companies respond to climate change, how they treat their workers, how they manage their supply chains and how they build trust and foster innovation.
  • Environmental: Greenhouse gasses (GHG) emission, deforestation, biodiversity, water and waste management, pollution, energy efficiency, renewable energy, etc.
  • Social: Migrant workers, child and forced labour, working and living conditions, employees’ relations, diversity, training, health & safety, local communities, etc.
  • Governance: Corruption, board diversity and structure, executive remuneration, tax strategy, regulatory policies, whistle-blowing, etc.
image
In response to this paradigm shift towards sustainability, the Malaysian Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI) has meticulously devised the . This framework aspires to cultivate a manufacturing sector that is economically prosperous, environmentally sustainable, and socially equitable.

It represents a crucial initiative within NIMP 2030 and is strategically aligned with Mission 3: Push for Net Zero.

The i-ESG Framework embraces a holistic approach, encompassing 17 strategies and 50 associated deliverables, organised under four components: standards, capacity building, financing, and market mechanisms.
As a company operating in Malaysia, adopting ESG practices can benefit business in several ways:
  • Regulatory Compliance: Enhances reputation, broadens capital access, and improves overall risk management for companies navigating local and international regulations.
  • Customer Engagement: ESG strategy goes beyond compliance, positively impacting brand awareness and fostering customer loyalty, satisfaction, and high employee morale.
  • Innovation and Differentiation: ESG-driven companies identify opportunities, attract top talent, and ensure sustained growth, differentiating themselves in a competitive landscape.
  • Resilient Supply Chain: ESG principles build robust supply chains, reducing risks, strengthening relationships, enhancing transparency, and increasing sales through customer loyalty.
  • Financial Performance: ESG adoption reduces costs, enhances efficiency, attracts investors, and improves financial performance through higher share prices.
  • Future Preparedness: ESG aids in risk management, fosters resilience, and innovation, and positions companies to adapt seamlessly to regulatory changes while anticipating emerging opportunities.
This Framework adopts a phased approach. Its initial Phase 1.0 "Just Transition" is scheduled for 2024 to 2026. During this phase, the focus is on heightening awareness, delivering training, and providing financial support with a particular emphasis on assisting MSMEs to embark on their ESG journeys.

To read more on the ESG Framework as devised by MITI,
image
We encourage our members to look to the Framework as we reflect, restrategise, and reinforce our efforts in ESG. We also anticipate Phase 2.0 of the Framework, scheduled between 2027 and 2030, aimed at accelerating ESG practices. Strategies for this phase will be meticulously crafted to align with both national and international ESG requirements.

Repurposing of Oil Palm Trunk (OPT) into premium palm-based engineered wood products
  • IOI Palm Wood, operating as "OnCore", is a sustainable initiative transforming oil palm waste into environmentally friendly palm wood panels.
  • This approach traps Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and provides an eco-friendly alternative to conventional timber.
  • By lessening the demand for natural forest resources, IOI Palm Wood plays a role in conserving habitats and ecosystems.

Rethinking on Waste Management
  • Transforming Oil Palm Trunk (OPT) into engineered wood products using OPT offcut as biofuel for energy plants is a significant, and environmentally responsible approach that reduces Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

Reducing GHG Emissions from Decomposition
  • By transforming OPT into engineered wood products and using it as biofuel instead of leaving it to decompose into methane, the release of GHGs is minimised. This action aligns with global efforts to reduce methane emissions.
