CPTPP Grows Malaysia's FDI in 3Q MITI Minister Reports Benefits in Reduced Trade Barriers |
Malaysia has experienced a surge in foreign direct investment (FDI), reaching RM914.9 billion by the end of the third quarter of 2023, with a significant contribution from the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). |
Malaysian Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz highlighted a cumulative FDI increase of RM14.9 billion, with notable rises from CPTPP member nations Japan and Australia. The services sector emerged as the largest recipient of FDI (50%), followed by manufacturing (42%).
Zafrul encouraged Malaysian businesses to leverage the CPTPP's multilateral benefits, emphasising that opportunities in sectors like professional services, construction, and financial services would greatly benefit.
It was also underlined that the CPTPP's impact on trade facilitation would enable Malaysian exporters to benefit from preferential tariff treatment. He noted that Malaysia's total exports to CPTPP countries showed growth in various sectors, with expectations of further expansion as countries progressively eliminate duties.
The minister emphasised the CPTPP's role in reducing trade barriers, particularly in e-commerce, allowing businesses and consumers easier access to online trading with other member countries.
Additionally, Zafrul highlighted provisions for government procurement (GP) under the CPTPP, offering Malaysian businesses equal opportunities to bid for projects in member countries such as Mexico, Peru, and Vietnam.
The agreement also recognises the importance of SMEs and supports their growth through initiatives like information sharing, digitalisation, and intellectual property rights protection.
Zafrul emphasised ongoing reviews of the CPTPP to address current economic, ESG, and geopolitical developments globally, with a commitment to promoting and safeguarding Malaysia's interests in all free trade agreements.
We're thrilled that the CPTPP has successfully proven to be beneficial to the economic welfare of our country and look forward to further developments.

DOSM Speaks on Malaysia's GDP Growth in 4Q and PADU |
Malaysia is poised to meet its 2023 gross domestic product (GDP) growth target of 4%-5%, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), according to Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin. |
He highlights that the traditionally robust consumer spending sentiment in the fourth quarter (4Q) of the year will contribute significantly to GDP growth. Consumer demand is a substantial GDP component, and he expects that it will drive growth, particularly with increased spending on back-to-school, year-end, and festive items during 4Q.
Mohd Uzir indicates a positive economic trend based on October's industrial production index, which showed growth in the mining, electricity, and manufacturing sectors. Malaysia's trade surplus in October reached RM12.87 billion, marking the 42nd consecutive month of surplus since May 2020.
Additionally, the country's unemployment rate in October declined to 3.4%. The DOSM chief expressed confidence that Malaysia's economic growth for 2023 is in alignment with the government's planned target.
Moreover, Bank Negara Malaysia has reported a 3.3% growth in Malaysia's economy in 3Q, with an overall expansion of 3.9% in the first three quarters of 2023. |
PADU was designed to be a national database of socio-economic information for every household in Malaysia. It is to provide regular analytics with a comprehensive store of data that updates in "near real-time".
The development of PADU is intended to allow for data-driven policymaking and decision-making, while also enabling targeted policy implementation.
The DOSM plans to conduct engagement sessions with state government leaders to ensure broad participation, particularly in rural areas, where positive feedback has been received, aided by the Information Department's efforts.
We're excited to see how PADU will transform how the Malaysian government supports the country. |
