The Malaysian Government Seeks Input for the 13th Malaysia Plan |
Dear Subscriber,
The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) aims to foster collaboration between state and federal governments to address socio-economic and development gaps across different regions. |
Collaborative Focus of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) Minister of Economy, Rafizi Ramli, emphasised that the plan aligns with the Madani government's focus on balancing economic growth with enhancing citizens' welfare and quality of life. He underscored the importance of shared responsibility in driving economic advancement, noting that the federal government frequently shoulders much of the development burden.
Engagement Sessions and State Involvement Selangor was the first state to host an engagement session for the 13MP, offering a platform for state governments, industry players, and the public to share ideas and insights. Similar sessions will be held across all 14 states to ensure diverse perspectives are included in shaping the national development plan.
Rafizi emphasised the need for innovative proposals that contribute meaningfully to the overall plan.
Path to Achieving High-Income Nation Status The 13MP is seen as a critical document in Malaysia’s ambition to attain high-income nation status by 2025. If economic projections within the plan’s timeline are met, Malaysia is on track to reach this goal.
The plan will undergo a rigorous approval process, with the final draft expected by April 2025, before being tabled in Parliament in July 2025.
The Ministry of Economy welcomes your views in drafting the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan.
The BMCC fully supports this collaborative effort! This initiative will enable governments, industry players, and the public to work together for the betterment of the Malaysian economy. |

Highlight from the Bi-Annual BiSEA Conference 2024 |
Our CEO, Jennifer Lopez, recently participated in the bi-annual Britain in South East Asia (BiSEA) Conference in Singapore. It was an insightful two days of exchanging best practices and brainstorming collaborative opportunities to advance trade between the UK and ASEAN.
We extend our appreciation to David Kelly, Executive Director of BritCham Singapore for crafting this dynamic two-day programme, which included fruitful engagement sessions with the members of BritCham Singapore.
We also thank Martin Kent, His Majesty's Trade Commissioner to Asia Pacific for hosting a delightful barbecue at his official residence, providing a great networking opportunity with senior members of BritCham Singapore.
It was exciting to see British companies in Singapore eager to expand into Malaysia, especially as we gear up for Malaysia’s upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship.
The ASEAN region offers immense opportunities for trade, driven by its rapidly growing economies, strategic location, and strong integration efforts. With a combined population of over 650 million and a rising middle class, ASEAN presents a significant consumer market for goods and services. |
With Malaysia also being one of the first countries to ratify the UK's accession to the CPTPP, the future holds great promise for UK-Malaysia trade collaborations.
If you are a British company keen on expanding your business into Malaysia or the ASEAN market, please reach out to Shaayla@bmcc.org.my |

ACCA | A Living Wage - Crucial for Sustainability |
ACCA has recently completed a global research, together with Shift and Forvis Mazars on “A Living Wage – Crucial for Sustainability”. The research highlights a number of key points on the importance for living wages and makes the case that wages should now be part of the sustainability agenda at board and senior management levels.
Access the report through this link. |
Keyfindings 89% of finance professionals surveyed worldwide recognise the importance of paying a living wage, but only 53% see it as their responsibility to ensure their organisations implement it. This striking disparity is a central finding of this report. - Ethics and human rights are the main reasons why living wages are important. Not paying a living wage should be regarded as an abuse of human rights, not dissimilar to issues such as modern slavery and child labour.
- A business which cannot afford to pay a living wage does not have a sustainable business model. Business models with low margins that need to pay below a living wage in order to be viable need to be critically redesigned on the basis of value.
- The living wage has the potential to act as a major socio-economic multiplier. It provides benefits across the eco-system – workers, employers, economy and governments.
- While 86% of respondents feel their organisation should pay a living wage to own its employees, only 34% believe their organisation should be responsible for encouraging their Tier 1 suppliers to do so.
- From a measurement and reporting perspective, finance and accountancy professionals should stay abreast of developments in sustainability reporting that focus on living wages and human capital. New approaches need to be explored by the profession for how it reports the value of people in corporate reporting.
The social agenda is really trending upwards for businesses and living wages are critical to this. As business leaders, we have a crucial role to play in this space. We must act now, driving ethical change across our organisations and supply chains, and be prepared for emerging reporting standards. If you have any questions on this research please contact Sharath Martin, ACCA Asia Pacific Senior Policy Consultant (Sharath.martin@accaglobal.com). |
