Highlights from the Inter-School Student Sustainability Conference at Charterhouse Malaysia |
We kicked off our timeline of events this ESG Horizons for a riveting and inspiring Inter-School Sustainability Conference at Charterhouse Malaysia, an initiative by BMCC's Education Committee.
After Deputy Headteacher Emma Rooney delivered the welcoming remarks, Y.A.M Tengku Zatashah binti Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj—Royal Patron of Make-A-Wish Malaysia, Chairwoman of Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia, and Founder of #ZeroFoodWastage and #SayNoToPlastic social media campaigns—spoke to the students with her efforts in combating the climate crisis. Her inspirational presentation centred on initiatives in environmental clean-up and revolutionary internet campaigns to reduce single-use plastics and food wastage.
Tengku Zatashah's speech was followed by Jasmine Low, Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University, who showcased Heriot-Watt's dedication to purpose-driven education. She emphasised the significance of training soft skills in students for holistic development. More on this Heriot-Watt's approach to education can be viewed on their website here. |
The students then manned exhibition booths on their sustainability projects that they would later share within their newly developed Student Sustainability Network. This initiative hopes to foster further collaboration between schools and build student ideas into innovative building blocks to better the future.
Two outstanding NGOs, Zero Waste and Sea Monkey Project, also participated in the event with engaging exhibitions and presentations that underscored their commitment to reducing pollution and promoting environmental responsibility.
The event concluded with closing remarks from Charterhouse’s Head Teacher Richard Davidson and Acting British High Commissioner David Wallace, who commended the students’ efforts and expressed their excitement for the potential of the Student Sustainability Network. |
We extend our appreciation to Charterhouse Malaysia and all participating schools for their invaluable contributions to this successful event. We hope this conference serves as an inspiration for students and educators alike, motivating them to take further action in their commitment to sustainability.

DEI Champions - Showcasing Workplace Heroes |
This November, we will also be featuring individuals who have been championing DEI in their own capacity in their workplaces.
What makes a DEI Champion? An individual within an organisation who actively promotes and supports diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. They advocate for creating a more inclusive and open working environment, often by: - Raising awareness by educating others about the importance of DEI and helping to address biases.
- Implementing initiatives that lead or support DEI-related programmes, policies, and practices within the organisation.
- Fostering an inclusive culture that encourages behaviours and practices that promote a sense of belonging for all employees.
- Advocating for change and working to remove barriers and create opportunities for underrepresented or marginalised groups.
- Serving as role models demonstrating inclusive behaviour and influencing others to do the same.
These efforts will be featured in videos that will circulate on our social media during ESG Horizons!
On top of organising valuable networking and knowledge-sharing events, we are also proud to showcase the efforts of our members who have pledged to make strides in climate action and DEI. |

Climate Action Pledges | Press Metal Alumnium Holdings |
They have built their own climate change strategy, roadmap, and even incorporated GHG emissions as a key metric within their ESG Remuneration Framework. Additionally, they also acquire both pre- and post-consumer aluminium scraps to extend the lifecycle of aluminium, committing to their circular economy practices.
They've also carried out collaborative efforts in addressing Climate Change with Jiaotong University on carbon capture research, participated as a working group member for the Voluntary Carbon Market by Bursa Malaysia, and obtained various recognitions from ESG ratings to ESG awards. Climate Action Pledges | DDCAP Group |
In 2021, DDCAP committed resources from its existing SRA governance structure to build upon its environmental achievements to date and develop a more formalised environmental policy.
Whilst DDCAP’s progress in this area had already put it ahead of many of its industry peers, DDCAP recognised that focusing on an environmental strategy ahead of any government or regulatory requirements would enable DDCAP to:
Gain further competitive advantage from its SRA initiative: - Increase engagement with staff and raise its profile with potential new hires;
- Preserve and promote its reputation as a “first mover” in its space; and
- Prepare to engage with stakeholders and clients who are asking more questions, more frequently, about the sustainability of their value chains.
DDCAP continues to take steps to reduce its carbon footprint. One of these steps includes the further expansion of its geographic footprint, which involves increasing headcount in existing regional offices, such as the Kuala Lumpur office.
DDCAP also seeks to lower its carbon footprint, reducing long-haul flights by 40%, through the expansion of its geographic footprint, and growing existing regional offices with increased senior staff.

The Group also monitors and reviews the green certification of existing buildings and townships where an opportunity arises. GSK proudly unites science, technology and talent to get ahead of disease, and in their performance report, they share their progress toward achieving this goal.
This is exemplified in their development of a low-carbon Ventolin program, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the inhaler by 90%. Phase III trials will begin in 2024, with regulatory submissions expected in 2025. |
GSK is also working to address the impacts of climate change on health. They're investing in R&D for medicines and vaccines for climate aggravated, infectious diseases which disproportionately impact the most vulnerable communities and working with their partners to increase the resilience of healthcare systems to climate change.
Their collaborations span both internally and externally - with patients, staff, suppliers, regulators and peers to ensure they embed climate and nature considerations throughout their entire value chain. |

XCL Education Malaysia | Cultivating Environmental Awareness in Students |
Many of the schools by XCL Education, like REAL Schools, emphasise outdoor learning and appreciation for nature, which can foster environmental awareness in students.
Sri KDU Kota Damansara, for example, recently had their Lower Primary students get hands-on with sustainability by learning to plant vegetables from seed to sprout. They aim to nurture a mindset of environmental stewardship - teaching their young Environmental Heroes how small, everyday actions can make a big difference for our planet.

Samadhi Retreats: An Eco-Conscious Imprint that draws from Nature's Boundless Beauty |
Samadhi Retreats weaves together dreamscapes that awaken the senses. The company’s advocacy in being at one with Mother Nature extends to treading gently upon the Earth and preserving the beauty we borrow.
Samadhi builds each property entirely using only second-hand old wood sourced from all over Malaysia. The natural landscape of the property’s surroundings is never disturbed; not one tree is felled and not a single boulder removed. Each structure was also built by hand, using only small tools; no heavy machinery, pieced together by the company’s own carpenters and artisans. |
Structures especially time-consuming to build this way was Japamala Resort’s iconic jetty with Mandi-Mandi restaurant at the end. The intention is as little disturbance to the biodiversity as possible. From waste management to protecting wildlife habitats, a harmonious coexistence must prevail. |
One of Samadhi’s favourite materials for both interior and exterior durability is bamboo. A powerful symbol of resilience, strength, flexibility & endurance, bamboo signifies harmony with nature and balance because of its rapid growth rate and renewability. It perfectly embodies the ideas of sustainable living and environmental responsibility. |
That said, the providers of this raw material are the Orang Asli, the community they have chosen to support, who provide all the bamboo the company uses across their properties, as well as the thatched roofing and housekeeping baskets. |
Furniture, like the bamboo-textured table tops, countertops, and walls—made with cement-infusion techniques—bamboo beds, casings for AC units, bins and tube lamps, and partitions which are used across Japamala Resort, Villa Samadhi, Tamarind Springs' lounge bar, and FOOK & Tamarind Hill, were made in-house.
Each item is crafted for durability & timelessness, promoting a low-waste philosophy that aligns with our eco-conscious principles.
Visit Samadhi Retreats' properties and remember to pay a little attention to all the stunning effects created by the natural beauty of bamboo and old wood. |

IOI Palm Wood Showcases ESG Initiatives |
IOI Palm Wood shares its implementation of a 620 kW AC equivalent Solar PV generation plant, which aims to significantly reduce their carbon footprint and enhance their energy efficiency. This initiative towards greater use of renewable energy not only supports their operations but also contributes to a cleaner and greener planet.
They are actively pursuing updates and official confirmation from the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil organisation to engage in the MSPO chain of custody (CoC) for oil palm biomass (using MS 2751:2022 as a draft standard). Their commitment to responsible sourcing and sustainable management of palm oil resources underscores our focus on environmental protection and community welfare. While they are actively involved in this initiative, they are eager to contribute to the development of this vital Malaysian standard. This standard should satisfy the proposed European Union Deforestation Regulations (EUDR) and future-proof the sustainable use of Palm Core globally.
In parallel, they are implementing ISO 14001 for Environmental Management, alongside ISO 9001 for Quality Management and ISO 45001 for Occupational Health and Safety. This integrated approach allows them to maintain high standards across all facets of their operations, ensuring continuous improvement and a safe workplace for their employees.
"At IOI Palm Wood, we believe that sustainability is not just a goal but a responsibility. Together, we can build a more sustainable future for our industry and the planet." |
