Malaysia Catalyses Digital Transformation and Inclusive Economic Growth with Budget 2025 |
|
This vision is bolstered by an inflow of US$16.9 billion from technology giants like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Google, and Oracle, signalling strong global confidence in Malaysia’s tech future.
Digitalisation and AI: The Next Frontier
This increased support for AI research and development underscores the country’s commitment to ethical AI practices and creating a thriving AI ecosystem. Establishing the ASEAN AI Safe Network reinforces Malaysia’s dedication to fostering responsible AI adoption and paves the way for private sector involvement in AI research.
Empowering Education for Future-Ready Skills Budget 2025 introduces a special tax deduction for private universities and training institutes that develop courses in AI, robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), data science, financial technology, and sustainable technology. Expanding Internet access across public universities, schools, and remote areas further supports equitable access to digital education and learning resources.
Investments in Strategic Industries The Budget also capitalises on Malaysia’s potential as a data centre hub and supports the transition to renewable energy. For instance, RM500 million from the KWAP Dana Pemacu fund will target data centre investments, energy transition, and advanced manufacturing. Khazanah is also dedicating RM1 billion over the next four years to grow the local semiconductor industry.
Support for SMEs and Entrepreneurs
Tax Incentives to Encourage Digital Transformation To facilitate the government’s mandatory e-invoicing rollout by July 2025, accelerated capital allowances (ACAs) for ICT expenses, including purchases of equipment, software, and consultancy services, will allow full-cost claims within two years. This encourages businesses to invest in digital infrastructure, aligning with Budget 2025’s goals to promote efficient and transparent digital business practices.
Budget 2025 demonstrates the MADANI Government’s holistic approach to digital transformation. From investments in AI and digital infrastructure to enhanced cybersecurity and support for SMEs, the budget creates a roadmap for an inclusive, resilient, and dynamic digital economy.
BMCC encourage businesses to adopt digital tools, leverage available grants, and engage with industry groups to keep up with developments. By taking proactive steps, including strengthening cybersecurity measures and investing in upskilling, businesses can thrive in the evolving digital landscape and contribute to the nation’s economic transformation.
