UK's Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution
Two centuries ago the UK led the world’s first Industrial Revolution. As the world begins to recover from the devastating impact of the coronavirus on lives and livelihoods, Britain is leading the way again into a new Green Industrial Revolution by investing in clean technologies – wind, carbon capture, hydrogen and many others. In 2019, the UK became the first major economy to adopt a legally binding obligation to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The announcement of the Ten Point Plan in 2020 laid the foundations for a Green Industrial Revolution, seeking to put the UK at the forefront of global markets for clean power and zero-carbon technologies.
The Ten Point Plan strengthens Britain's ability to bring together other countries and positions it as a leader in green technologies. Through its Presidency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties 26 (COP26) in Glasgow, the UK will urge ambitious action from countries, businesses, cities, and investors alike.
All of these ambitions will be propelled by doubling down on Britain’s world-leading expertise in green finance and innovation. In the 2021 UK Budget, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak MP announced an array of green initiatives including the establishment of an infrastructure bank to invest mainly in green projects, a change in the remit of the Bank of England to include a duty to support the move towards near zero emissions, as well as the launch of the UK's and the world's first sovereign green bond.
Race To Zero (R2Z)
To build momentum around the shift to a decarbonised economy ahead of COP26, the Race To Zero (R2Z) is a global campaign mobilised to rally leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions, investors for a healthy, resilient, zero-carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs, and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth.
The BMCC, in collaboration with the British High Commission, is presenting a series of engagement activities to support the R2Z, kicking off with the The Time is Now: Race to Zero webinar on 25 March 2021, where progressive thought leaders and companies will discuss the transition to a zero-carbon future by businesses, from across Malaysia and the world, and how we can scale up the current efforts further. |
