1) Malaysia’s New Cabinet Line-up Sworn In

His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Al-Abdullah Al-Mustafa Ri'ayatuddin Billah Shah Ibni Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah gave his consent to the names proposed by the Prime Minister to be the new Cabinet of Malaysia 2021. A total of 31 ministers and 38 deputy ministers were appointed and sworn in before His Majesty on 30 August 2021.

2) Government Releases Pre-Budget 2022 Statement

On 31 August 2021, the Ministry of Finance published its first-ever Pre-Budget Statement (PBS) ahead of the government’s parliamentary proposal on the country’s expenditure for next year in a bid to be more transparent. Besides highlighting the status of certain key initiatives for 2021, it also showed the expenditure performance of the Government for this year.

The highlight of the PBS is of course to give a preliminary overview of the Budget 2022’s direction, which will be based on three main themes revolving around the national recovery from the Covid-19 crisis, rebuilding of national resilience and catalysing reforms to ensure greater sustainability and inclusiveness in its development agenda.

3) Malaysia’s Trade Performance Maintained Its Upward Movement in July 2021

The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), on 27 August 2021, released Malaysia’s trade performance for July 2021 and the period of January-July 2021. The figures were encouraging as trade increased by 13% to RM180.96 billion, the sixth consecutive month of double-digit growth since February 2021. Exports grew by 5% to RM97.32 billion, the 11th consecutive month of year-on-year (y-o-y) expansion since September 2020.

The export growth was backed by higher shipments of petroleum products, palm oil and palm oil-based agriculture products as well as chemicals and chemical products driven by robust external demand. Exports to major markets namely ASEAN, the European Union (EU) and Japan recorded positive growth.
