MIHAS-Standard Chartered Sustainability Conference Underscores the Critical Importance of Decarbonising Supply Chains in Tackling Climate Change

The MIHAS-Standard Chartered Sustainability Conference, a BMCC-supported event, took place last Saturday, 11 September 2021 with an esteemed line-up of speakers comprising industry and public sector leaders who shared illuminating insights and perspectives on building resilient supply chains to make global trade more sustainable and inclusive.

The conference opened with welcome remarks by Abrar A. Anwar, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia and Chairman of the BMCC. Mr. Abrar said that due to the unprecedented shocks brought on by the pandemic, many companies are relooking into their supply chains to improve their performance sustainably. By integrating environmentally and financially viable practices into the complete supply chain life cycle, companies can conserve resources, optimise processes, uncover product innovations, save costs, increase productivity and even promote corporate values.

H.E. Charles Hay, the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, then delivered the opening address where he talked about the world's reliance on global and regional supply chains for all types of goods and the resultant by-products of global trade, i.e. the emissions and pollution that are no longer acceptable. He went on to say that Malaysian businesses or SMEs aspiring to be part of global supply chains need to consider their own green agenda and practices. Incorporating Halal principles and green practices will enhance the competitive advantage of Halal companies as part of global supply chains. In this space, Malaysia, as a global Halal hub, has a major role to play. He emphasised that countries which are not moving rapidly to net zero will find themselves increasingly uncompetitive and will not be able to attract the FDI they require.

YBhg Dato Seri Ir. Dr Zaini Ujang, Secretary General, Ministry of Environment & Water in his keynote address updated the audience on the government's key climate change efforts for 2021/2, including the formation of the Malaysian Climate Change Council (MyCAC) in April 2021 and the submission of Malaysia's updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in July 2021. With this submission, Malaysia has affirmed its non-conditional target to reduce economy-wide carbon intensity (against GDP) of 45% in 2030, an increase of 10% from the earlier submission.

In her opening speech for the "Decarbonising Supply Chains" panel discussion session that the BMCC co-organised with the conference organisers, BMCC Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Lopez emphasised the need for all businesses in a supply chain to have the same green ambitions in order to see more prominent gains in the climate change combat. She urged companies that are part of a global supply chain or intend to be to tap on the opportunities available by solidifying their climate ambitions, as more and more global companies that they might want to work with are likely to have green agendas and would prefer like-minded organisations as their suppliers.

Jennifer also shared the Chamber's active role in encouraging businesses of both Malaysian and British heritage in Malaysia to make their net zero commitments. She concluded her remarks by announcing the upcoming Malaysia Climate Action Week ─ featuring a series of webinars that support the Road to Zero agenda targeted at businesses ─ which the BMCC will be co-organising with the British High Commission from 25 to 29 October 2021.

The BMCC would like to convey our appreciation to our panellists Dato' Mohd Ashhadi Alias, Elina Jani, Margie Ong and Adam Ng for contributing their valuable insights and time, and to Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia for the opportunity to co-organise the panel session.
