Project Summary:
The "Waste to Energy for Community (WASTECO)" project, developed by the innovators team from PHE, addresses waste management issues in Balikpapan, Indonesia, where 480 tons of waste are generated daily. The project transforms waste from the Manggar Landfill into renewable energy by capturing methane gas, which is then used as a substitute for subsidized LPG in local households. WASTECO achieves this by converting waste and leachate into methane gas through advanced oil and gas technologies. The residual waste proceeds to the Manggar site to be processed as a feedstock for methane gas. Since its launch, WASTECO has benefitted 380 households, 1,520 residents, and 28 MSMEs, saving over 456 million rupiah in energy costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 296,356 ton CO2eq annually. The project has also become a model for sustainability, replicated in East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and Bali, and has attracted over 20,000 visitors interested in renewable energy and waste management.

Company Profile:
PT Pertamina Hulu Energi is a subsidiary of PT Pertamina (Persero). Until now, PHE manages a portfolio and/or operations of 69 subsidiaries, six joint ventures, and two affiliated companies that manage domestic and foreign oil and gas blocks and are engaged in downstream oil and gas and services business activities, with the number of employees as many as 14,154 people.

Project Summary:
The "BerSEAnergi untuk Laut" (SEAnergy for the Ocean) project by the innovators team from PT Pertamina International Shipping addresses critical issues in marine conservation amidst the growing maritime activity. With around 20,000 whale fatalities annually from ship collisions and 1.5 million tons of oil discarded into oceans, the SEAnergi initiative aims to harmonize economic advancement with ecological sustainability. SEAnergi utilizes the Enhanced Daily Tanker Position (EDTP) application to track vessels in real time using GPS technology, integrating Marine Protection Area (MPA) monitoring and whale shark tagging data. This system provides detailed vessel tracking, alerts for sensitive areas, and integrates marine biologist data to map migratory patterns. The project covers 449 km² across 7 MPAs and protects 205 whale sharks, aiming to reduce emissions by 20,870 tCO2e. SEAnergi supports scientific research, boosts coastal community resilience, and is projected to generate average additional revenue of USD 141,410 annually, setting new global standards in maritime conservation.

Company Profile:
PT Pertamina Internasional Shipping was established in 2016, as a spin-off of PT Pertamina (Persero), Indonesia’s state-owned energy company. PIS then has been appointed as a Sub- holding of Integrated Marine Logistics (IML) carrying out all shipping, marine services, and logistics businesses.

As the biggest energy shipping company in Indonesia, PIS shows its track record and expertise in distributing energy across the world. Each year, it also transports more than 1.5 million KL oil and products to fulfill the energy demand of Indonesia, one of the world’s fastest growing economy.
