The GOC Executive Committee together with the CPD Program Planning Committee are proud to announce that our 23rd Annual Continuing Professional Development meeting will take place in Toronto, Ontario from Thursday, April 27th to Friday, April 28th, 2023, at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel.

Fellows Educational Course

The Society of Gynecologic Oncology of Canada is pleased to invite you to the third Fellows Educational Course. Two accomplished gynecologic oncologists will discuss topics relevant to fellows, residents, and early-career attendings.

During the first hour of the course, we will be reviewing five impactful articles in gynecologic oncology, published in 2022. We believe that this session will be beneficial to all fellows.

During the second hour of the session, we will focus on setting up your academic career. A successful academic gynecologic oncologist will share with us insightful tips and advice on how to successfully plan your career.

Molecular Biology for Gynecologic Cancers Course

Identifying and Evaluating Novel Therapeutics: from Bench to Bedside

The objective of this symposium is to discuss current, relevant, molecular and cell biology discoveries, highlighting how these insights impact our understanding of the pathogenesis and treatment of cancer. The goal is to provide engaging and enlightening presentations geared to clinicians with a view to broadening their knowledge of the basic science of cancer as it relates to the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer. Key historical advances that have shaped our approach to cancer are of interest.

For the 2023 symposium, we will be discussing how models can be used to better understand the molecular profile of different gynecological cancers, test drug responses, and improve patient outcomes.

Dr. Altman is the President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology of Canada (GOC), the program director for the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, chair of the University Medical Group (UMG), vice chair for the Medical Management Safety Committee (MMSC) at CancerCare Manitoba, the current Gynecologic oncology track lead for the FIGO 2021 Scientific planning committee and the previous co-chair of the Canadian Obstetrics and Gynecology Review program (COGRP). Dr. Alon Altman is a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the Rady Faculty of Health Sceinces. He is also a gynecologic oncologist at the Health Sciences Centre/Cancercare Manitoba. He has a strong interest in undergraduate/postgraduate education and research.

He is actively involved in multiple university, national and international committees.

Christopher Booth MD FRCPC is a Medical Oncologist and Health Services Researcher at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada. He is a Professor of Oncology and Public Health Sciences and holds the Canada Research Chair in Population Cancer Care. In his clinical practice he provides care to patients with gastrointestinal cancers. Dr. Booth’s research program explores access, quality, and value of cancer care in Canada and globally. In 2016 Dr. Booth spent a sabbatical as a visiting scientist at the Regional Cancer Centre in Trivandrum, India. He is an Advisor (Health Services Research) to the National Cancer Grid of India, an Honorary Consultant at Pallium India, and a member of the WHO Essential Medicine List Cancer Working Group. Dr. Booth has published over 300 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has served as research supervisor for >30 trainees. In 2022 he received the Exceptional Healer Award at Kingston Health Sciences Centre for embodying compassion, respect, and clinical excellence. In 2022 he was also inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

Dr. Melica Nourmoussavi Brodeur is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center under the mentorship of Drs Britta Weigelt and Dmitriy Zamarin. Her research interests involve uncovering potential molecular vulnerabilities in ovarian cancers using novel preclinical models to develop personalized approaches to ovarian cancer treatment. Dr. Brodeur is a trained Canadian gynecologic oncologist. She obtained her Doctorate of Medicine from McGill University in Montreal after which she completed her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She then completed a four-year training in the Gynecologic Oncology and the Clinician-Investigator Programs at the Université de Montréal during which she completed her Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences. Under the direction of research supervisor Dr. Anne-Marie Mes-Masson, her thesis focused on the comparison and utility of ovarian cancer preclinical models for treatment response assessment. Her research endeavors have earned her awards to support her research training and work including a multi-phase clinician-scientist trainee bursary from the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) – Canada Graduate Scholarship – and research excellence bursaries from the Montreal Cancer Institute. She is also among the prestigious alumni of the NCI-funded AACR Molecular Biology in Clinical Oncology Workshop. With OCRA’s support, Dr. Brodeur is interested in understanding the mechanistic basis underlying the tumor-immune cell interactions in ovarian cancers with SWI/SNF gene alterations, in particular SMARCA4-altered cancers. These studies could highlight new therapeutic strategies for these subtypes of ovarian cancer.

He completed his medical degree and Obstetrics & Gynaecology residency at the University of Western Ontario, a fellowship in Gynaecologic Oncology at the University of Toronto and McMaster University, and a research fellowship in the Department of Systems Biology at the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Centre. He runs his research program through OvCaRe and has funding through private donations and his medical corporation to support his laboratory staff. He is Co-Investigator on a recent grant award from the Cancer Research Society with Dr. Cheng-Han Lee, and has done contract research for investigational drug testing. His laboratory has been supported as well by research funds from Dr. Dianne Miller and the Division of Gyn Oncology, the BC Cancer Agency, the Carraresi Foundation OvCaRe Research Grant, and VGH and UBC Hospital Foundations. Mark regularly supervises PhD and MSc candidates and is a member of the department’s Research Advisory Committee.

Dr. Liat Hogen is a gynecologist oncologist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Center and Toronto Genral hospital , Toronto. She is an assistant professor in the Department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Toronto.
She received her medical degree and residency training at Tel-Aviv University in Israel. She completed her fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Toronto.
She is the co-founder and co-leads the Comprehensive Ovarian Tumor Program at University Health Network, and is the research lead of this program. She is a member of the Ovarian Cancer Guideline Development Group, Program in Evidence-Based Care (PEBC) and is a member of the Canadian Cancer Trials Group.
She is the author of publications in the field advanced ovarian cancer and endometriosis associated ovarian malignancies.

Dr. Rahima Jamal received her B.Sc. in Molecular Biology from the University of Quebec in Montreal in 1999. She then obtained her medical degree from the University of Montreal in 2003. She then completed her residency in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Medical Oncology also at the University of Montreal. She is a graduate of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in all three specialties. She then continued her training with a fellowship (2009-2011) in Clinical Research (Drug Development Program, Phase I and II) at the Canadian Clinical Trials Group (CCTG) in Kingston, Ontario under the mentorship of Dr. Elizabeth Eisenhauer and at the Jewish General Hospital in the Clinical Research Unit. Dr. Jamal is an Associate Professor at the University of Montreal and has been working as a hemato-oncologist at the Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM) since 2011. She has a special interest in clinical research, cancer immunotherapy, early clinical trials and melanoma. She has been actively involved in the Unité de Recherche Clinique en Oncologie et Hématologie (URCOH) as a coordinating physician until 2018 and participates as a principal investigator in several phase I, II and III studies. Since September 2018, she has been the medical director of the CHUM’s Unit for Innovative Therapies (UIT), a unit dedicated to Phase I and II studies. This unit also advocates for the development of investigator-initiated studies by providing a research platform for CRCHUM investigators. Her research program focuses on translating basic research discoveries into clinical research In addition to proposing novel treatments for patients with advanced cancer in clinical trials, she has developed a melanoma research program in collaboration with the Jewish General Hospital whose goals are to understand the mechanisms and identify predictive biomarkers of response and toxicity in patients treated with checkpoint inhibitors. In collaboration with the CRCHUM’s investigators, she has taken lately an interest in the role of the microbiome in melanoma with phase I and II investigators initiated trials running through the UIT.

Dr. Iwa Kong is a radiation oncologist at BC Cancer Vancouver and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia. She specializes in management of gynecological and breast malignancies and image-guided brachytherapy. She completed residency training at the University of Toronto and obtained a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Toronto Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation concurrently with a research fellowship at Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre. She is actively involved in clinical trials in breast and gynecological cancer and a member of the CCTG Quality of Life committee and Gynecology oncology liaison. Her research interests include incorporation of meaningful patient reported outcomes in trial design, clinical trials in breast and gynecological radiation and tailoring of radiotherapy by tumour biology.

Dr. Susie Lau is an Assistant Professor appointed in the departments of Oncology and Obstetrics and Gynecology at McGill University.

She completed her medical degree at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. She then went on complete her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec and became Royal College Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Following this, she completed a Royal College Approved Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program at the University of Montreal.

At the completion of her clinical training at the University of Montreal in 2003, she returned to the McGill University Health Centre as an attending gynecologic oncologist and joined the gynecologic oncology division at the Segal Cancer Centre/SMBD Jewish General Hospital in 2005. She graduated with a Masters of Science degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McGill University in 2008.

She is President of the Régroupement des Gynécologues Oncologues du Québec (RGOQ). The RGOQ is a society of individuals whose goal is the improvement of gynecologic cancer care in Quebec through education, research, and advocacy. She is also the Director of the Gynecologic Oncology fellowship program at McGill since 2012. She is an active member of the Royal College Training Committee shaping the future face of training programs in her subspecialty and is also on the Royal College Subspecialty Examination Committee.

Her research interests are diverse and include new investigational treatments and clinical trials in gynecologic cancer, as well as the application of robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery in gynecologic oncology.

Dr. Llauradó Fernández obtained her B.Sc. in Biology at the University of Barcelona (UB) and completed a M.Sc. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biomedicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in Spain. Subsequently, she trained as a cancer researcher at the Research Institute of the Vall d’Hebrón University Hospital (VHIR) in Barcelona, where she obtained a PhD in Ovarian Cancer Research under the supervision of Dr. Jaume Reventós Puigjaner. During her PhD, she conducted specialized research training in the Department of Pathology of the Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital (Lleida, Spain; under the supervision of Dr. Xavier Matías-Guiu), and in the Department of Gynaecology Oncology at the Medical University of Wien (Austria; under the supervision of Dr. Robert Zeillinger). Through her research work in molecular diagnostics and biomarkers for uterine, prostate and ovarian cancers, she collaborated with biopharmaceutical industry partners such as Oryzon DX and the Reig Jofré Group, and participated in the development of Transbiomed S.L. (first spin-off of the VHRI, later acquired by Amadix). In 2013, after a year of post-doctoral work, she moved to Canada to join the laboratories of Dr. Geoffrey Hammond and Dr. Mark Carey at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of British Columbia (UBC) were she became a research associate and program manager. Since then, her main research interest has focused on the study of the molecular landscape of low-grade serous ovarian carcinomas (LGSOCs), the development and characterization of patient-derived research models, and the prediction of therapeutic responses. In 2016, she became a member of the Society of Gynecology Oncology of Canada (GOC) and, since then, she has participated in the development of the Community of Practice in LGSOC and the preparation of the annual Molecular Biology Course. Dr. Llaurado is a certified Laboratory Animal Science Associations researcher (FELASA, Spain), a Scientific Knowledge Translation professional (SickKids Hospital, Toronto), and has undertaken complementary KT and program management training from multiple centers (MSFHR, VCHRI, UBC).

Dr. Taymaa May is a gynecologic oncologist at Princess Margaret Cancer Center and an associate professor at the University of Toronto. She is the deputy head of the division of surgical oncology at the Princess Margaret, the regional surgical oncology lead at Ontario Health/CCO and the co-chair of the Gynecologic Oncology Group of Ontario. Dr. May is the director of the business unit of the Gynecologic Oncology Society of Canada, a member of the board of directors and the past-chair of the society’s annual general meeting.
Dr. May completed medical training at McGill University, residency training at the University of Toronto and fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/ Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Taymaa May is a surgical scientist at the University Health Network with a research focus in surgical advancement and translational science in ovarian cancer.

Dr. Mes-Masson obtained her Ph.D. from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at McGill University in 1984. From 1984-1986, she completed post-doctoral studies at the Molecular Biology Institute, University of California Los Angeles. After a short period as a research associate at the Biotechnology Research Institute, Dr Mes-Masson joined the Institut du cancer de Montréal and the Department of Medicine at the Université de Montréal in 1989. A full professor since 2001, Dr. Mes-Masson was the Scientific Director of the Institut du cancer de Montréal and Director of cancer research at the Centre de recherche du Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CRCHUM) from 2003-2018 and in 2017 accepted the position of Associate Director, Basic and Translational Research, at the CRCHUM. While maintaining an active basic research program that focuses on the molecular events that contribute to cancer initiation and progression, her laboratory has pioneered the development of novel cell- and tissue-based models for ovarian cancer. More recently Dr. Mes-Masson pursues research largely focused on delivering personalized medicine and her research focuses on the prediction of therapeutic responses and the development of new therapeutic agents for ovarian cancer.

Dr. Danielle Vicus is a gynecologic oncologist at the Odette Cancer Center, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center. She completed her fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Toronto and obtained a Master’s of Science in Clinical Epidemiology through the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. She is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto and an Affiliate Scientist at the Sunnybrook Research Institute.

Dr. Vicus She is the GOC chair for the communities of practice and is a member of the GOC executive. She is also the QI (Quality Improvement) lead for the division of Gynecologic Oncology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences and is a voting member on the NRG Oncology Rare Tumour Cmt. Her key research interests are rare gynecologic tumours and cancer screening strategies in women. She has received multiple grants and awards during her career.

Tania Vrionis joined Ovarian Cancer Canada as CEO in August 2021. She brings to the role more than 20 years of diverse leadership experience in the charitable sector. Tania is deeply passionate about empowering and mobilizing communities to achieve impact, affect change, and truly make a difference in the lives of Canadians.

Tania is a graduate of Western University and prior to joining Ovarian Cancer Canada, Tania served on the national executive team for the MS Society of Canada for eight years, most recently in the role of Vice-President, Community. Her previous experience includes leadership positions at The Kidney Foundation of Canada, St. Clair College, John McGivney Children’s Centre and Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Dr. Britta Weigelt received her PhD from the Netherlands Cancer Institute/ University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and undertook her postdoctoral training at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, USA, and Cancer Research UK London Research Institute, London, UK, before moving to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) in New York, USA, in 2012.

Dr. Weigelt is a Molecular Geneticist and the Director of the Gynecology DMT Research Laboratory at MSK. Her research interests include the refinement of the classification of breast and gynecologic cancers and the identification of novel drivers and potential therapeutic targets by bringing together traditional pathology tissue-based techniques with genomics, bioinformatics, and functional and signal transduction studies. Furthermore, Dr. Weigelt’s team is determining strategies to overcome the challenges posed by intra-tumor genetic heterogeneity through cfDNA and single cell sequencing analyses, and is studying the somatic genetics of hereditary breast and gynecologic cancers.

She has published her findings in over 270 peer-reviewed articles and serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, The Journal of Pathology and the European Journal of Cancer.

Dr. Westin received her doctorate of Medicine from the University of Florida College of Medicine. She completed Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. During fellowship, she received an MPH with a concentration in epidemiology from the University of Texas, School of Public Health. In addition to her training in Gynecologic Oncology, she also completed a short fellowship in Investigational Cancer Therapeutics. She joined the faculty at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2010. She has been honored as a K12 scholar, Andrew Sabin Family Fellow, CURE Magazine Ovarian Cancer Hero and a Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) Foundation Scholar Investigator.
Dr. Westin focuses on developmental therapeutics and the use of biomarkers to predict response and recurrence in gynecologic malignancies. She currently serves as the Medical Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Center, Director of Early Drug Development and Phase I trials in her department and is a Co-Director of the Ovarian Cancer Moonshot. Dr. Westin is a member of the NRG Oncology – GOG Developmental Therapeutics, Phase I, and Early Phase Protocol Oversight committees. She is the co-PI for five major projects in her institution’s SPORE in Uterine Cancer and SPORE in Ovarian Cancer. In addition, she is currently the PI or co-PI for greater than 30 novel treatment trials in gynecologic malignancies.
Dr. Westin has authored or co-authored greater than 200 scientific publications, book chapters and invited articles. She has been invited to lecture as an expert on clinical trials, genomic testing and targeted therapy in gynecologic malignancies in national and international venues. She was selected for the competitive American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Leadership Development program and serves on five ASCO committees including the Communications Committee and Gynecologic Cancer Guidelines Group. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) and the GOG Foundation. In addition to serving on the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Uterine Task Force and Gynecologic Cancer Steering Committee (GCSC), she serves as a co-chair of the GCSC Ovarian Cancer Task Force and the MDACC Executive Scientific Review Committee.

Where can I stay in Toronto during the CPD event?

We have negotiated room discounts and secured a limited number of group-rate hotel rooms. The group rate rooms are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Book early for the best selection and price. A valid credit card is required to secure a group rate. Cancellations received within 72 hours of arrival date will incur 1-night room and tax cancellation charge, outside of 72 hours there will be no charge. Complimentary Wi-Fi in all guest rooms with group rate. Be sure to add your hotel rewards number when booking to receive points for your loyalty program.
