Inequality in China is on the rise. In 2016, a Peking University study found that the richest 1% of Chinese households own 1/3 of the country’s wealth. Girls in China receive 1.5 fewer years of schooling than boys on average. Severe disparities persist between urban and rural China, as well as in healthcare, housing, and education.
Now more than ever, China's rapidly evolving and complex social sector is becoming an important leveraging point for change. The combination of widespread social media technologies, sector innovation, and a millennial generation driven to do good could lead to new and more effective approaches for combatting inequality here and around the world.
Join Philanthropy in Motion (PIM)'s Impact Lab to gain first-hand experience in Beijing's social innovation sector, while gaining new insights on how we can more effectively make an impact. Select Yenching scholars and Peking University students will explore different approaches to reducing inequality, learn frameworks for thinking on a systems level, and make decisions on how to allocate a real venture philanthropy fund to the social initiative they deem most impactful.

About the Impact Lab
The Impact Lab is an immersive experiential leadership program for stduents to learn and apply skills related to social impact, due diligence, crowdfunding, collective decision-making and more. Through curriculum delivered by cross-sector speakers, practitioners and experts, scholars will:
- Learn first-hand how social entrepreneurs and grassroots non-profits are scaling impact to reduce inequality and promote inclusion in Beijing;
- Gain a strategic perspective on philanthropy and build skills to develop as socially-minded leaders;
- Connect with high-level speakers and mentors in China's rapidly emerging social innovation space;
- Apply frameworks for conducting due diligence on social ventures;
- Crowdfund and manage real venture philanthropy funds

Eligibility
Participants will be selected through a competitive application process. Current university and graduate students at Peking University as well as Yenching Academy Scholars are encouraged to apply.
Successful applicants demonstrate:
- Passion for social innovation and impact.
- Intellectual curiosity and open-mindedness to new ideas
- Proficiency in English and Mandarin Chinese
