KEYNOTE SPEAKER

THINKING RESILIENCE
Humanity faces several converging crises this century, including climate change, resource depletion, habitat destruction, pollution, pandemics, and loss of biodiversity. All are direct or indirect results of 150 years of rapid economic growth and population expansion enabled by the energy of fossil fuels. Environmental scientists have spent the past half-century proposing ways to prevent these problems from coalescing into a civilization-ending sustainability crisis, but for the most part societies have remained on a “business-as-usual” growth trajectory. As a result, it is now too late to entirely avoid consequences that are likely to include extreme weather, unstable food systems, floods of refugees, and teetering financial markets. In response, nations need to adopt resilience-building strategies. Resilience science helps us understand how and why ecosystems and societies pass through phases of growth and decline, and also provides insight on ways to prevent decline from turning into collapse. Some of the strategies that are likely to be helpful include: re-localizing economies and food systems, reducing energy usage while building renewable energy production, de-emphasizing market solutions in favor of community-based cooperative enterprise, and implementing recommendations from “post-growth” economists (including universal basic income, modern monetary theory, and supplementation of GDP with direct measurement of human well-being). In addition, nations will need to devote more effort to anticipating crises and pre-adapting to changing economic and environmental conditions. Electorates should be informed as to the nature and causes of the converging crises; otherwise, nations will fall prey to demagogues who promise “solutions” that only make problems worse.

Forests are important. It is estimated that over half of terrestrial biodiversity is found in tropical
forests. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, forest
certification is a voluntary process whereby an independent third party (the “certifier”) assesses the
quality of forest management and production against a set of requirements (“standards”)
predetermined by a public or private certification organization. Within the standards, mechanisms
exist for forest monitoring, tracing and labelling timber, wood and pulp products and non-timber
forest products, where the quality of forest management is assessed. The two types of forest
certification that exists are forest management certification and chain of custody certification. Forest
management certification covers assessments on the management of a forest against a standard
while chain of custody certification verifies that a materials produced comes from certified forests.
This would include measures to ensure that a material can be verified along the entire supply chain,
from the forest to the end product. Credible forest certification covers much more than just logging
practices, it also accounts for the social and economic well-being of workers and local communities,
transparency and inclusiveness in decision making. Forest certification was introduced amidst
concerns over increasing deforestation in the tropics in the 1980’s and 90’s.

After the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio failed to produce an agreement to stop deforestation, a group of
businesses, environmentalists and community leaders came together to create the Forest
Stewardship Council. Gathered in the first FSC General Assembly in 1993 in Toronto, Canada, the
group set out to create a voluntary, market-based approach that would improve forest practices
worldwide. At the time, FSC represented an alternative to boycotts of forest products, which were
shown to be counterproductive since they devalued forest land. The FSC Secretariat opened in
Oaxaca, Mexico and the FSC was established as a legal entity in Mexico in February 1994. The FSC
Secretariat relocated to Bonn, Germany in 2003. FSC has a mission to promote environmentally
appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests. The FSC
envisions that the true value of forests is recognized and fully incorporated into society worldwide.
FSC is the leading catalyst and defining force for improved forest management and market
transformation, shifting the global forest trend toward sustainable use, conservation, restoration,
and respect for all.

CORPORATE MALAYSIA TO BUILD A FUTURE IN WHICH HUMAN CAN LIVE IN HARMONY WITH NATURE

Thursday Oct. 01 - 02:00pm - 02:25pm (25 min)

Dr. Henry Chan (Doctor of Social Sciences, Helsinki)
Conservation Director, WWF-Malaysia

The world that we live in today is confronted with competition over scarce resources. Our production system requires energy to power our manufacturing plants and transportation – releasing huge amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Our forest that absorbs the carbon dioxide is getting smaller and smaller, being converted into various land uses to produce food, needs and wants. Under business-as-usual scenario, our Planet continues to warm giving rise to extreme weather of prolonged draught causing forest fires, and extended heavy rains causing mudslides and flood. While we humans only gradually and occasionally face the brunt of climate change, the natural world suffers drastic consequences of lost habitats, population decline and among some species, extinction.
In this, WWF-Malaysia seeks to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. We work with individuals, corporations and governments to build partnerships for a sustainable future.
This presentation shows that Corporate Malaysia is able to play important roles in supporting the conservation of wildlife as characterized by: (a) securing the wildlife species from being poached and hunted for the illegal wildlife markets; and (b) securing the natural ecosystem and species habitats for the wellbeing of wildlife.
Our work saving tigers in northern Perak shows that concerted efforts by patrolling the forest will stamp out snaring that decimates tiger population. In Sabah, we work with the state government to protect orangutan habitats and work with the private sector to balance elephant needs with palm oil plantations.

The global pandemic has brought upon a new normal – Offices remain closed as we work from home, shopping malls remain vacant as we shop online. With that also comes the opportunity to combat a sworn enemy – climate change. The webinar aims to educate participants on the idea of climate taxonomy and climate financing, with reference to successful case studies and how such an approach can be applied to the Malaysian context.

It important to recognise that capitalism is not a monolithic concept; it exists in varieties. Within the boundaries of its foundations, actors can have considerable agency over the extent to which economic resources are committed to address environmental and social needs. While the idea of stakeholder-driven management has been introduced in 1984 already by R. Edward Freeman, the concept has gained significant momentum in recent years, culminating in the 2019 World Economic Forum in Davos addressing the topic of “stakeholder capitalism”. His theory argues that a firm should create value for all stakeholders, not just shareholders. Likewise, the concept of “Creating Shared Value” (CSV), introduced in 2011 by Michael Porter and his colleague Mark Kramer, is in line with the notion that capitalism can be redefined towards greater impact on societal challenges.
By developing solutions across products and services, value chains, and business ecosystems, private enterprises can support solving unmet social needs in profitable ways, i.e. create competitiveness and long-term shareholder value.

Amid COVID pandemic many businesses are struggling to stay afloat. Yet, solution is simple – sustainability. By putting the planet and people first, businesses open a door to a long-term sustainable generation of profit and higher returns on investment compared to those, who stay away from implementing sustainable practices.
Description (extended):
Economic crisis gave businesses and investors an opportunity to re-evaluate and re-set their core strategies. Sustainability is not a charity. It brings monetary value. But only when the sustainable practices are put as a priority, and not simple greenwashing to receive a small benefit. Sustainable business is a mindset. It is time to emphasize the role of sustainability in profit generation and vice versa. That’s why business should have values at the core of their operations and management of putting sustainable development and future of the planet before profit-making.

Introduction to Sustainability and Global Supply Chain Audits

A business must be able to sustain over the long run. Supply chains has a strategic impact on the organization’s performance. Supply chain audits present an “opportunity for the organization to breakdown internal barriers to communicate improvements required to make sure they’re controlling costs and mitigating risk factors. A sound supply chain audit requires understanding of third-party risks to the organization’s profitability.
Sustainability Audit is all about assessing risk and opportunities to your business based on standards and principles of sustainability.
It demonstrates how Management
a) Manage business risks better
b) Increase investor confidence
c) Improve stakeholder relations
d) Sustain profitability of the business g guidelines
i. continue attracting investors confidence to your business.
Based on a unique skill set with sustainability and communication as key prerequisites, a strong supply chain auditor would understand the business and the environment in which it operates and can work with individuals across the organization to help identify supply chain risks and develop response plans.

Objective of this conference presentation is to create awareness for participants to understand how best to manage their supply chain compliance requirements especially during post- COVID 19 pandemic period. Among other objectives includes
1. To protect your brand image and emphasize on responsible corporate citizenship
2. To identify and leverage on performance of your supply chain for business development and market expansion.
3. To review and enhance your sourcing and operational policies
4. To ensure safe and ethical working conditions in your supply chain
5. To comply with statutory requirements for ethical compliance, quality management, environmental impact and security.

REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE- Vertical Farming

Thursday Oct. 01 - 02:25pm - 02:50pm (25 min)

Hi-tea with Philip Loo & Jessy Chahal

Malaysia, who champion in commodity-based agriculture is lack of diversification in
vegetable production. Less than 5% of agricultural land is being used to grow vegetables. As
a result, Malaysia imported more than RM4.6 billion of vegetables in 2018 highlighting food
security problems here.
At the same time, the young generation does not want to venture into this dirty, tedious
and difficult business. Resulting in more and more vegetable farms being used for
development, turned to commodity plantation or abandoned.
Malaysia ended up relying on vegetables import and massive foreign workers dominating
vegetable farming activities.
We need to have a comprehensive and complete farming technology to replace the
conventional way of growing primary food. The technology must have the following
characteristics.
1. Scalable from home farming, community farming to large scale farming.
2. Anyone can grow without prior farming knowledge and skills
3. Fully automated or semi-automation, to reduce labour and ease of management
4. Highest space utilization and can be deployed in any empty space.
5. High yield and fast-growing
6. Base on healthy, non-toxic, environmentally friendly and sustainable principles
One of the most effective farming techniques that can make a change is Vertical Farming.

Hi-Tea with Dr. Rahmat & Raj Aria
-SHAZINNOVATION SOLUTION

A lot has been said, written and argued about Mindset Change. Leadership, Context, Staff training, and company culture are some elements that have been linked to it. However most of these methods depend on the message being sent, rather than understanding the context of delivery. This includes analysing the social environment that requires that change, modifying the way messages are shaped and broadcast to the recipients based on how the people accept or reject ideas.

The need to get as many people as possible to adopt the Regeneration mindset is more important than ever before. Social Capital Data Analytics (SCDA)has been developed by ShazInnovation Solution and is used by firms to manage innovation and adoption of its supporting mindset. In the age of digitalization, data is king, and SCDA takes advantage of this proliferation to support this adoption. Through it, the relevant data surrounding mindset change and culture is captured, analysed and used to improve adoption. We discuss this approach, and how those driving the Regeneration agenda can benefit from it.
