Moshe Szyf (Professor at McGill University)

Moshe Szyf

Professor at McGill University

Dr. Moshe Szyf is a James McGill professor of pharmacology and therapeutics and GlaxoSmithKline-CIHR Chair of Pharmacology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, where he has been since 1989. In addition, he is the founding co-director of the Sackler Institute for Epigenetics and Psychobiology at McGill University. Szyf is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research Experience-Based Brain and Biological Development program. He is the founder of the first 'pharma' to develop epigenetic pharmacology, 'Methylgene, Inc,', and the founder of the eponymous medical journal covering epigenetics. Szyf's lab pursued the medical notion two decades ago that DNA methylation is a prime therapeutic target in cancer and other diseases. His lab also provided the first emerging set of evidence that the social environment early in life can alter DNA methylation which in turn launched an emerging field of 'social epigenetics.' Szyf received his Ph.D. from Hebrew University and completed his postdoctoral fellowship in genetics at Harvard University's Medical School.
