    Board Member at IFRS

    Ndidi Nnoli-Edozien was appointed as a full-time member of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) in June 2022, effective 15 July 2022.

    Her career has been focused on building connections between business and sustainable development, working across multinational and indigenous companies, public institutions and civil society organisations—in Africa and Europe—to initiate sustainable development initiatives.

    She served as the inaugural Group Chief Sustainability and Governance Officer of Dangote Industries Limited—one of Africa’s largest manufacturing businesses—from 2017 to 2020. In this role, she was responsible for developing the company’s sustainability culture, strategy and reporting across 14 countries.

    Dr Nnoli-Edozien has also served on several boards, committees and initiatives focused on corporate culture, impact investing, sustainability reporting and governance.

    She has a PhD in social ethics, cultural adaptation, sustainability and governance from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Germany and a Bachelor’s degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science, UK.

    Bonang Mohale is currently the CEO of Business Leadership South
    Africa (BLSA). Mr Mohale ended a distinguished term as Vice President
    Upstream and Chairman of Shell South Africa (Pty) Limited at the end of
    June.
    Mr Mohale, who originally studied to be a medical doctor, has had a
    distinguished career at the helm and in leadership roles of several major South African and multinational companies; including Otis Elevators, South African Airways, Sanlam, Limited, and Drake
    & Scull Integrated Facilities Management. He currently serves on the Boards of Swiss Re Africa (12 years); Hollard
    Insurance (11 years); Rand Merchant Bank & Oakhurst Insurance (Chairman). Mr Mohale has an impressive track
    record of building successful companies, delivering results and making significant advances in transformation in the
    companies he has been involved in. He has been a vocal courageous and active proponent of transformation since the
    1980s, and played a leadership role in the Black Management Forum (BMF) for over 33 years.
    Awarded Bonang was conferred with an Honorary Professorship in Marketing Management by the University of Pretoria,
    where he serves on their Advisory Council. 2012 IPM CEO of the Year. Received the PRESIDENTIAL AWARD for his
    “Servanthood in South African Industry & the Economic Empowerment of Previously Disadvantaged Individuals” 2001.

    Stavros Nicolaou is a member of Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Limited Group Executive Committee and is the Group Senior Executive responsible for Strategic Trade Development. Previously he was CEO of Aspen’s Export Business. Aspen is Africa’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturer and a now world leader in Anaesthetics and injectable anti-coagulants.

    Aspen is one of South Africa’s most globalised multinational companies with a presence in over 50 geographies globally, with 26 manufacturing facilities across 6 continents. He was instrumental in introducing the first generic ARV’s on the African Continent developed by Aspen, which has gone on to save hundreds of thousands of lives in South Africa and on the African Continent.

    Nicolaou is a graduate of Wits University and has over 31 years experience in the South African and International Pharmaceutical Industry, 27 years of which have been with the Aspen Group or its subsidiaries and is a previous winner of the SA Institute of Marketing Management (IMM) Health Care Marketer of the year Award. He is a previous recipient Monty Rubenstein Award for proficiency in Pharmaceutics from the Wits University Pharmacy Health Sciences Faculty.

    He was awarded, the Order of the Lion of St Mark by the Greek Orthodox Pope Theodoros II and recently received the title of “High Commander of the Order of the Apostle & Evangelist Mark” of the Patriarchate of Alexandria. He has been inducted as a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA), one of the highest honours bestowed by the PSSA, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Medicine from Wits University, a top 100 Health Science Faculty for Clinical Medicine. He was appointed as an Honorary Member of the Southern African Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis at the Society’s recent AGM.

    Nicolaou is particularly passionate about diversity, transformation, championing localisation and building bridges between the private and public sector in order to improve access to treatment for patients in emerging markets and improving healthcare outcomes in these markets. He has been involved in a number of social responsibility and charitable causes aimed at reducing poverty, inequality and assisting economic growth and development in South Africa.

    He has been a speaker at a number of conferences, including the Economist Roundtable, the World Economic Forum (WEF) and has delivered a lecture on ARV developments at the Raigon Institute, a JV between Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital.

    An executive at Pick n Pay for 15 years until 1999, Gareth headed up various divisions and served as Joint Group Managing Director and the Managing Director of Pick n Pay Group Enterprises. He was appointed to the Board in 1990 as an executive director, until becoming a non-executive director in 1999. From 2002 to 2010 Gareth was Chair of Pick n Pay Holdings Limited, which at that time was the ultimate holding company of the Group. In 2010 he was appointed non-executive Chair of Pick n Pay Stores Limited.

    Among his other involvements, Gareth is co-chair of the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa and is previous co-chair of the international Consumer Goods Forum. He is also a trustee of the Masisizane Fund and was a member of the international board of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO). He chairs the Ackerman Family interests.

    Youth Employment Service (YES) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ravi Naidoo, joined the organisation with over 25 years of experience in implementing and managing a range of social change and impact programmes. During this time, he has worked with trade unions, the public sector, and private sector fund management, finding ways to implement programmes in complex institutional environments. His role as CEO assists YES in collaborating with other industries and organisations to help create a better future for all South Africans.Along with this, Naidoo forms part of the National Planning Commission for the next five years, where he will work on the long-term plans to advance growth and development in South Africa. He has recently been appointed as a member of the advisory committee for Mining Indaba 2024.Some of his successes prior to joining YES, include the establishment of the SA National Green Fund, being the manager of the multi-stakeholder ‘Health Roadmap’ that culminated in government’s AIDS turnaround strategy (which saw average life expectancy rise from 49 to 62 years), and the restructuring of the Unemployment Insurance Fund to include coverage for the first time for over 600,000 domestic workers. Ravi holds a master’s degree from Harvard University.

Keynote on how climate change requires a shift in culture

    Alex Hetherington, Director of the Third Line Group, is an independent ESG strategist and investment analyst. He has over twenty years working with public and private companies on ESG strategies, reporting responses and alignment with investor expectations. He currently assists investors and financiers understand the climate exposure of portfolios and projects, and helps companies prepare for impending physical and transitional climate change trends.

    He trains regulators, investors and company leaders in climate change regulation, climate response and climate-related risks and opportunities identified through climate change scenario analysis. Where appropriate, he deploys the TCFD reporting framework to assist in such analysis.

    During 2023 he has been sub-contracted to train the Amman Stock Exchange, Jordan CPA Society and the Saudi Arabian Market Authority by international ESG finance training company, weESG. His training focuses on emerging international climate regulation; international climate reporting standards; and, investor awareness on the risks and opportunities of climate change.



    Alex is also the co-founder of Carbon Calculated, an accredited GHG accounting and climate change consultancy. Carbon Calculated has expertise in carbon footprinting, including PCAF (the GHG accounting methodology for the financial sector); third party carbon footprint verification; CDP and TCFD submissions; and, the setting of science-based GHG reduction targets for financial and other industries. Alex and Carbon Calculated work synonymously on projects that entail shared and collaborative expertise.
