Matthew Howe
Matthew has over 20 years of experience in the venue and events industry, commencing in production and stage management. His career has taken him from theatres and touring productions to holding senior executive positions in some of the world’s world-leading venues and precincts. His executive leadership roles include iconic venues such as Crown Resorts Melbourne, Melbourne and Olympic Parks, Southern Cross Station and Federation Square. He has led large-scale operational teams delivering iconic global events and critical infrastructure operations across master planning projects, commercial developments, significant capital works programs, and technology innovation projects across significant infrastructure and public precincts. A leader committed to long-term success working across all levels to deliver strategic, operational outcomes. He is a passionate coach, mentor and enabler of leading event management and public precinct teams. Matthew is deeply committed to protecting critical social infrastructure and public safety and is a lead facilitator for the Barrington Centre specialising in Executive Leadership, Crisis Management and Commnication. He has worked with both state and federal agencies in counter-terrorism and community protection specifically in relation to places of mass gathering, precinct design and security overlays. As a Non-Executive Director of the Venue Management Association (Asia Pacific), he continues his commitment to developing the industry’s future leaders and the long-term development of the venues and events sector.

Consequence Management Application and the Lessons Learnt from Compounding and Concurrent Crises
Sets the scene of when concurrent disasters are experienced, like fires, floods and cyclones, and how to prepare your teams for the consequences around dealing with these significant, compounding, concurrent and sustained disasters.

Major General Jake Ellwood
Major General Jake Ellwood DSC, AM, CSC graduated from the Royal Military College-Duntroon in 1990 into the Infantry. Since graduating Jake has spent the majority of his career leading teams in operational and training roles. During his 33 years in the Regular Army Jake deployed as a Company Second In Command to Kosovo in 1999 on secondment with the British Army, to East Timor as a Company Commander during the initial intervention, to Iraq as a Battalion Commander in 2007 during the surge, to East Timor as a Battalion Commander in 2008 during the second intervention and then in Afghanistan from 2014 to 2015 where he was responsible for coordinating current coalition operations across the nation. He has also served on exchange postings with the British Army and United States Marine Corps. His most recent postings include Deputy Chief of Army and Commander of the 1st Division. In 2020 he was appointed as the National Coordinator for the Australian Defence Forces response the Black Summer fires across three States and a Territory involving 6500 Australian and international forces. In 2022 he served as the State Recovery Coordinator for the Southern Queensland floods.

Angus Mitchell (Chief Commissioner and CEO of Australian Transport Safety Bureau)
Angus Mitchell
Angus Mitchell has extensive experience in organisational leadership and management, maritime operations and safety investigation. He joined the ATSB from Maritime Safety Queensland, where as General Manager he oversaw the safe and efficient movement of vessels into and out of Queensland’s 21 ports, and was responsible for compliance activities and safety investigations for Australia’s largest recreational maritime fleet. During his tenure, Maritime Safety Queensland was recognised with an Australian Industry and Shipping Award for its role in managing international shipping throughout the COVID pandemic and supporting the welfare and safety of international seafarers. Prior to leading Maritime Safety Queensland, Mr Mitchell was the Executive Director of NSW Maritime, where he oversaw Australia’s largest state’s primary maritime regulatory, investigative and compliance agency. He has also served as Deputy Harbour Master – Operations for Sydney Ports, where he was responsible for managing day-to-day port operations for both Sydney Harbour and Port Botany. Angus is a former officer of the Royal Australian Navy having seen service in operational, policy and international roles. He is an Indonesian linguist and commenced his five-year term as ATSB Chief Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer on 2 September 2021.

He draws upon his own lived experiences as well as insights from some of the world's most influential philosophers. Together, Mark's experiences and insights have helped many leaders sustain themselves through the best and worst of times.
