Snake River Road-Stuck Between A Rock and a Hard Place Jon Gellings•Devin Montgomery
This presentation will the describe challenges and creative solutions Asotin County and the Consor team implemented to widen and rehabilitate a portion of Snake River Road near the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. To achieve AASHTO minimum lane and shoulder widths, the team was faced with difficult design decisions that involved removing portions of an 85-foot-high basalt cliff and installing a 500-foot solider pile retaining wall to avoid impacts below the ordinary high-water mark of the environmentally sensitive Snake River. Extensive outreach with the Nez Perce Tribe was required due to the culturally sensitive nature of the project site.
