The Putrajaya Vision 2040 and the Aotearoa Plan of Action are ushering in a new era for APEC by calling for an increased focus on sustainability and inclusion. The Under the APEC 2023 theme of “A Resilient and Sustainable Future for All,” the United States is organizing its agenda under the priorities of “Interconnected. Innovative. Inclusive.” Similarly, the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) is building its work for the host year around the theme of “Equity. Sustainability. Opportunity.” The session will provide context for the 2023 Executive Roundtable with a discussion on APEC/ABAC 2023 objectives and deliverables, and ways progress achieved this year can lay the groundwork for success in future APEC host years.

Session Two: Sustainability

Thailand’s promotion of the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economic Model in APEC culminated in the APEC Economic Leaders’ endorsing the Bangkok Goals on the BCG Economy in November 2022. To further APEC’s work on the BCG economy, and sustainability overall, the U.S. will include environmental sustainability and approaches to mitigating climate change in most APEC workstreams during 2023. This panel will explore how the U.S. can successfully utilize APEC as a vehicle for sustainable growth in the Asia-Pacific in partnership with the private sector.

Session Three: Inclusion

In Bangkok last November, APEC Leaders reiterated their commitment to inclusive growth in their annual communique. This builds on a strong APEC legacy of efforts to promote inclusive growth, including policies to support small and medium-sized enterprises, the establishment of the Policy Partnership on Women in the Economy in 2011, and a more recent focus on creating economic opportunity for groups with untapped economic potential. This panel will explore ways that APEC can collaborate with the private sector and other stakeholders to craft inclusive policies and practices that address barriers to economic inclusion.

The impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the critical need to ensure that economic integration in the region develops in a manner that promotes resilience and robust connectivity within and between economies. This panel session will examine ways that APEC can serve as a platform for convening stakeholders and launching initiatives aimed at addressing potential vulnerabilities and preparing economies in the region for future shocks.
