Tackling the severe effects of climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions have topped many nations' agendas in pursuit of the planet's sustainable development. Ambitious projects have been initiated across the world. From the high-level commitments agreed in Paris and transparent disclosure requirements for public companies on climate risks, to start-ups creating ball sized flotillas to soak up CO2 in the ocean and the production of consumables like vodka from CO2, everybody is chipping in with their creativity to combat global warming. One aspect of these carbon projects is to enable carbon offset by institutions and companies; some being done on a voluntary basis and others with financial assistance.

Meanwhile, many states' emissions caps for industries are compelling businesses to participate in a regulated market, making excessive carbon emissions more expensive while allowing corporates to take part in carbon trading via the instrument of carbon credits.

The recent United Nations countries' commitment to produce a legally binding treaty by 2024 to address the world's plastic pollution may turn out to be a further significant effort in helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As many of the carbon projects such as wind, solar and reforestation are seen taking place in developing countries, this session will explore:

  • How is Myanmar tackling climate change?
  • How is Myanmar taking part in the carbon offset initiatives?
  • Opportunities for carbon offsets in Myanmar
  • Is carbon trading an option to explore?
  • What initiatives are there in Myanmar to offset the country's plastic footprint?
