THE ONE DOLLAR CAMPAIGN-MITIGATING THE IMPACT OF AVIATION ON CLIMATE CHANGE Afema Ronnie
The One-dollar Campaign is a project involving Aviation Bodies with reference to Airlines in mitigating the impact of Aviation on climate change. The program is envisaged to kick start in Uganda and later spread out to the rest of Africa with the partnerships of other African Airlines. Our main goal is to build self-sustaining, self-reliant, well-informed and environmentally conscious Aviation industry through a tree planting exercise to offset the carbon emissions of the different respective Airlines and other aviation stake Holders. The Project will be implemented through the Aviation Development Africa Ambassador from Uganda.

Unlocking opportunity within a new paradigm • South Africa in crisis • a $bn+ opportunity Nicola Millson
South Africa attracted global attention for its ability to leapfrog political crisis into a transformative solution on its post-apartheid path to democracy. We are currently in another crisis with significant and escalating energy, food and water challenges. How can we overcome these compounding and complex challenges, smartly leverage international funding, ignite local ingenuity - and find transformative solutions?
In an interactive and informative session, we will explore the levers for systemic change and emerging next practice - and find positive ways to shift our perspective and organisational strategies from risk and crisis management into value creation.

Komati Power Station Repowering and Repurposing Case Study Beauty Mazibuko
Eskom conducted extensive studies to determine the socio-economic impact of power station closure and have also analysed technical possibilities for repowering and repurposing at those sites, in support of the Just Energy Transition. We have been instrumental in promoting and obtaining climate finance from the international partner group to implement some of this work, with Komati Power Station being the first and a “flagship” of this programme.

Decarbonising African Industry: Opportunities, challenges, and risks for the African Private Sector Dr. Nick Charalambides
Africa has contributed minimally to global carbon emissions, but the effects will be severely felt on the continent. While there are strong commitments from the continent to reduce carbon emissions, there is potential tension between objectives of the global North to decarbonise and Africa’s development objectives. Our work looks at decarbonisation from the perspective of African businesses – discussing the framework they operate within, the challenges they face, opportunities they see and support required from the public sector for their businesses to contribute to decarbonisation. We found that several leading businesses in Africa have business models that directly result in decarbonisation. Other companies demonstrate the competitive edge of adopting a low-carbon circular economy approach. Interviews with certification bodies revealed that while there is general alignment between producer and consumer preferences in terms of environmental and social targets, there are challenges when it comes to certification processes, and the growing number of differing standards. Going forward, awareness raising and capacity development in public and private sector will be crucial for meeting decarbonisation targets.
