Ryan Byers will be speaking on the topic of Safety Compliance in Colorado. Ryan is a trainer and conducts many of CMCA's training classes, on topics from Annual DOT Inspections to DOT Files and Recordkeeping.
Ryan was raised on a cattle ranch in Western Colorado in a small Community known as Pea Green. He became a state trooper and eventually assisted the FMCSA in the development of course of training programs for North American Standard Inspection Procedures (NAS) for the United States mainland and training specifically designed for Alaska and the Hawaiian Islands. Ryan became one of the FMCSA’s first Master Instructors and began training instructors in the NAS course procedures and Instructor Development.
After CSA-2010 went live in the United States, Ryan was witnessing the profound affect it was having on Motor Carriers and decided to leave the Colorado State Patrol at the end of 2011 to form the company Front Range Compliance Services and begin working with companies who utilize commercial motor vehicles in their day to day operations.
To date Ryan and his staff have assisted thousands of companies throughout the United States in operating with safer practices and maintaining a satisfactory level of compliance.
Shawn has been with the NTSB office of highway safety as a motor carrier investigator since 2015 when he retired from the Maine State Police at the rank of Lieutenant after 21.5 years. While with the Maine State Police he worked a variety of assignments including Commanding Officer of Troop K/Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit. Shawn currently lives in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area.
Captain John Hahn began his career with the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) in July of 1999 and is the commander of the Motor Carrier Safety Section. In his role Captain Hahn is in charge of a unit with statewide responsibility for commercial vehicle enforcement, safety education and outreach. His additional responsibilities include that of an advisor to CSP executive leadership on regulatory matters and rulemaking related to commercial vehicle safety.
Captain Hahn has served in a variety of capacities during his 25-year career with the agency which include public and media relations as the leader of CSP’s Public Affairs Unit. He also served previous served as the commander of the Patrol’s executive security operations at the State Capitol.
Captain Hahn holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Science from Metropolitan State University and is a graduate of the 267th session of the School of Police Staff and Command through Northwestern University. He is a member of the Research Advisory Committee for the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) as well as a member of the board for the CMCA Foundation. Captain Hahn currently serves as the elected vice president of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) and will transition to president this September.
Before joining the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) as the Western Regional Field Administrator, Scott Hernandez served in the Colorado State Patrol for over 30 years. He began his career as a CVSA certified inspector and size and weight officer. Scott maintained a close relationship with the commercial vehicle industry throughout his career, working as a sergeant, captain and major in positions tied to partnerships in commercial vehicle safety. During this time, Scott worked closely with FMCSA on several workgroups and committees including CSA-2010 and the Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee.
Scott retired from the Colorado State Patrol as the Colonel, and worked briefly with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance as the Director of Crash Investigations and Standards.
Scott is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the FBI Academy Leadership Institute and the Northwestern Police Staff and Command School.
Brenda has been a researcher at the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute since 1990, first as a graduate student and professionally since 1994. She specializes in the areas of intelligent transportation systems for commercial vehicle operations, business logistics and commercial vehicle safety - subjects on which she has authored and presented numerous articles.
Kevin Reynolds is experienced in operations, finance, strategic marketing, business expansion, DOL, OSHA, and DOT regulatory compliance. After graduating from The University of Texas Red McCombs School of Business, he founded and ran his own business for 15 years. For the following 15 years, Kevin has been advising clients around the country in DOL, DOT, and OSHA regulatory compliance and crisis management.
