Identifying Key Factors that Influence Student Success on Your Campus

Tuesday Jun. 08 - 02:15pm - 03:15pm (60 min)

Student success is a complex phenomenon influenced by a variety of factors, and institutions are continuously engaged in the search for programs and policies that will provide the most impact. Research in higher education has provided insights on the benefits of specific programs, but ultimately each institution must determine which programs will work best for the needs of their specific community. The discovery process starts with a deep knowledge of the community and the dynamics of how the community interacts. Without question student success is a community issue, and must engage both staff and faculty in the effort. Although the aim is to improve student success, in order to achieve this, institutions need to have an understanding of goals and expectations, demographic compositions, cultural backgrounds, individual experiences, and the overall campus climate for everyone at the institution. This session will present the approach CalArts took to design a major initiative around student success. Although each institution’s plan will necessarily be unique, the grounded inquiry-based approach CalArts has taken to collect and analyze disaggregated data in order to reveal issues, develop strategic goals, and monitor progress can be replicated.

Pandemic Pivot: internships and equity - what happened and what’s next.

Tuesday Jun. 08 - 03:30pm - 04:30pm (60 min)

For the third consecutive year, employers surveyed by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) identified internship experience as the top differentiator between two equally qualified candidates. Due to the pandemic and economic downturn, the number of students who completed internships during the summer 2020 semester dropped sharply.

There has been an increase in the number of internships made available to students since the lockdown began. Some sites have offered in-person internships, while most are offering remote and hybrid opportunities. The benefits of moving to a virtual internship format are emerging. Students have the ability to complete internships with organizations outside of their geographic area without the cost of travel and living expenses. Layered on top of these changes is a heightened awareness of the lack of diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education and the workplace.

This presentation will explore how career centers evolved over the past year - pivoting from the first adjustments and accommodations that were put into place during the Spring 2020 semester through the discovery of what form internship experiences will take in the future. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Career and Professional Experience team will provide examples, lead breakout sessions, and conclude with a summary of best practices. There will be three breakout sessions highlighting the pivots undertaken during the pandemic.

Building Dream Pathways: The Collaborative Journey of Supporting Art Foundation Students in Declaring their Major

Tuesday Jun. 08 - 02:15pm - 03:15pm (60 min)

At Virginia Commonwealth University, the Writing Center, Career Center and School of the Arts’ Art Foundation Program collaborated to pilot AFO 101, a non-credit bearing course designed to support and facilitate the holistic development of about 500 first year students. This project, utilizing the Canvas platform, created and retooled existing student resources. All partners incorporated playful activities into the student process to assuage the angst and stress that had been a part of the declaration process in previous years. The end result was a self-guided, asynchronous course that guided first year students step-by-step through exploring their academic options, their written voice, and their career possibilities, which collectively empowered students to say, “I do declare.”
