12h00 – 12h30: Cullinan Diamond Mine, Let the boot do the talking

In this lesson, delegates will explore South African gumboot dancing. We will be presented with an opportunity to also perform this historic dance.

Gumboot dancing originated in the gold mines of South Africa, where black miners were forced to work in dangerous and unhealthy conditions. They developed a form of rhythmic communication using their boots, which were fitted with metal plates, to create a language of sounds and beats. Over time, this evolved into a form of dance that became popular in South Africa and beyond.

During the apartheid era, gumboot dancing became a symbol of resistance against the oppressive regime, and it was often used in political rallies and protests. However, in the post-apartheid era, gumboot dancing took on a new meaning as a tool for cultural diplomacy. It was used to showcase South African culture to the world and to build bridges between different communities.

In the tiny town of Cullinan, you will find this big hole, which is amongst the biggest in the world. This spectacle is 1,000 meters long, 500 meters wide, and about 450 meters deep. It was at this mine, that the 3,108-carat diamond was found in 1905 and is claimed to be the largest uncut diamond ever found and forms an integral part of Britain's Crown Jewels.

14h30 – 16h00: Lunch at Oak Avenue Boulevard

The bustling street is filled will heritage buildings and sites that are explicitly pleasing to the eye     as well as several old miners' houses.

As you wander down the road visitors will come across numerous galleries to peruse and many fascinating shops selling a variety of interesting items, some of which you won't easily find anywhere else. Museums along the way give you more history about this quaint town as well as many other interesting historical facts. Visitors can stop in at one of the many coffee shops or restaurants along the way to quench their thirst or satisfy that rumbling tummy.
