Project Planning: Respect for the Community Larry Rincover
Transparency, inclusivity, accountability and respect. Including property owners in the planning and design process early leads to more sustainable outcomes. A more participatory and socially responsible process in invaluable to a successful project objective.
How do Performance Enhancers & Corrosion Inhibitors Improve Traditional Chloride Deicers? Robert Greene
No longer a new or novel idea to reduce chlorides in the environment and improve safety on the highways, enhanced liquid deicers have become a staple of the deicing industry. From pre-treatment, residual enhancement, corrosion inhibition for both infrastructure and equipment, fuel savings and reduced labor costs, enhanced liquid deicers have helped many highway departments improve their level of service. How do these products continue to evolve, help improve highway safety, save money and protect the environment from excessive chloride use? How can these products help alleviate pressure from rising fuel costs and supply chain disruptions? This presentation will help answer those questions.

Bridging the Generation Divide... & Jeopardy! Jason Allen
“Millennials are ruining America!” “Generation X is out of touch!” “Ok, Boomer!” Throughout history, every generation has believed that subsequent age groups are unworthy of carrying the torch, while the younger generation actively hopes the old folks will just get out of the way. With the technological boom of the early 2000s, never has this generational divide in the workplace been more noticeable than today. This presentation will examine the important role that two critical leadership qualities, empathy and perspective, play in our daily interactions with our colleagues. It will also consider the differences between the generations, why the divide seems so great, and what, if anything, we can do about it. (I recommend that you pay attention because there will be a “quiz” at the end...)

Road Maintenance Equipment Don Edwin Irving•Dean Wood
Capital I Industries Inc began building road maintenance equipment in 1992. Starting with grader mount hydraulic system Sod Mulchers, followed by a pull-type version for tractors. The pull-type has its own independent hydraulic system. Another of the atachments available is the One-Way Snow Plow with quick atach lift groups for graders. The Capital I hook system for the lift groups is longer for both Cat and John Deere graders, reaching higher and lower than that made by Cat or John Deere. We are the first company to patent a Postless Snow wing, with a 30 or 56 inch bench. The Capital I Brush and Grass Mower is 6 ½ or 7 ½ feet wide and fits on Capital I wing brackets. The quick atach 9 and 10 foot dozer is a straight cutting edge dozer. The All Season U/V Dozer is a 2 edged dozer used for multifunctional purposes winter and summer. The 6-Way Dozer is a straight edge dozer. The Quick Atach Gravel Reclaimer fits the Capital I wing brackets and runs off the graders hydraulic system. All equipment can be found on Capital I’s website: www.capitali.ca.
Concrete pavement roundabouts are becoming a popular alternative to a conventional “cross” style intersection in the US. This presentation will explore why roundabouts are becoming so popular among transportation officials. Topics covered will include proper design and construction of concrete pavement intersections, with an emphasis on the best joint layout and design for long term performance. Finally, the costs of recent projects will be presented.

Accelerated Bridge Abutments for Single-Span Bridges… Use Your Own Roadway Crews Stan Crawforth
Explore recent thinking and a developing standard-of-care relating to MSE abutments comprised of large block facing or welded wire facing for local road bridges. Pick your design life 75 years….100 years. Examine some facilitating layout, staging and detailing ideas. Look at how roadside walls can be incorporated into the wingwalls. See a nice way to bring the roadway approach into the MSE wall system. Discuss how the Owner can direct the management of proprietary facing products. Build about three sets of cost-effective MSE abutments for the cost of one standard DOT rigid concrete abutment. When is possible it to build both abutments in one week and install your bridge superstructure the next?
Use of Cold Mix Asphalt Roadway Rehabilitation in Eastern Oregon Gabe Burgess•Max Veneris
Presentation is use of cold mix asphalt technology with two previous projects completed for ODOT in eastern Oregon. This process requires reduced production costs and allows for greater placement windows and lower overall maintenance costs. The presentation will detail the process of use of cold mix including developing mix design, mixing, transport, placement and compaction. Presenting two projects performed for ODOT in 2022 and 2023 on US 20 east of Burns and OR 205 near Frenchglen. Will detail specifications and special considerations needed during construction.
