I hope you're as excited as I am about the upcoming CDAD Policy & Power Hour.

Join us on Friday, August 9 from 10:00 - 11:00 am for an exclusive members' only virtual meeting. You will have the opportunity to learn about and provide feedback on two housing policies. Keep in mind that CDAD hasn't taken positions on these policies, however, we think it's important for members to be informed and engaged.

  • Pre-sale inspections of residential houses, and
  • Proposed changes to the City of Detroit's Rental Ordinance

For the first half hour (10:00 - 10:30), you will hear from Ken Scott, a CDAD member, past President of the Greater Detroit Realtist Association and Detroit Association of Realtors, and a HUD certified housing counselor. Ken leads the Detroit Homeownership Center CDC, whose mission is to facilitate the empowerment of individuals to achieve and maintain homeownership through effective education and counseling, before, during and after the home purchase. Ken and CDAD's Policy Director, Ruth Johnson, will discuss the importance of inspections of residential houses before sale. To learn more about this topic, please review the three documents provided by Ken.

The second half hour (10:30-11:00), Ruth will facilitate a discussion around the City's proposed amendments to the Rental Ordinance. Currently, only 10% of landlords comply with the legal requirements to ensure that Detroiters live in safe, habitable rental homes. The CIty has proposed a "One Inspection, One Fee" plan. The Duggan Administration is guided by a Center for Community Progress report (March 2024). You may review the report and the proposed Ordinance amendments. Since the City's proposed changes are very significant and highly technical, the Detroit Right to Counsel Coalition and nonprofit legal services organizations are still in the process of analyzing them. You need not be a legal scholar or a rental housing expert to participate in and contribute to this discussion.
