He is the Head of Department of Internal Medicine at Helen Joseph Hospital, a tertiary academic hospital attached to the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition, he is the Acting Academic Head of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Wits University. He is also a clinician in private practice at the Centre for Integrative Health based in the Sandton Medi-Clinic and the Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital. Dr Bayat is also a director at the Lenasia Clinic Trial and Research Unit (LCTC). Dr Bayat is the current chairperson of the Society for Endocrinology, Metabolism & Diabetes of South Africa (SEMDSA) and was part of the International Congress of Endocrinology organizing committee in 2018. He is a contributor and part of the editorial panel of the South African Type 2 Diabetes Guidelines as well as the South African Thyroid Guidelines. Dr Bayat is well known locally and internationally, having been an invited speaker and chair to the World Internal Medicine Congress (2018), International Congress of Endocrinology (2018), EASD symposium (2018, 2017) as well as having been part of the Diabetes Education Program in Sub Saharan Africa. He is an invited reviewer to multiple National Internal Medicine and Endocrinology Journals. In addition, Dr Bayat sits on several Regional and National Drug Advisory Boards as well as Diabetes and Thyroid Advisory Panels. Dr Bayat’s research interest is in diabetes, thyroid and adrenal diseases.

He also works as a paediatric pulmonologist at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. As a researcher, Ziyaad completed his doctoral thesis on the clinical and immunological epidemiology of Group B Streptococcal (GBS) disease. Over the past decade, his primary research focus has been on the burden of invasive GBS disease in young infants, and he serves on the WHO Technical Advisory Group on GBS Vaccine Development. In addition, his research interests include paediatric lung health, health advocacy and medical education. Ziyaad is a National Research Foundation Y1-rated scientist, and has undertaken investigator-initiated, original research using a range of clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory-based research techniques to establish a successful research output, including the publication of cited papers in high-impact factor journals in the field. Professor Madhi completed his undergraduate and postgraduate training at the University of the Witwatersrand, qualifying as paediatrician in 1996 and obtaining his PhD in 2003. He currently also holds the positions of Director of the South African Medical Research Council Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytical Research Unit (VIDA). He currently serves as the deputy- Chair of the World Health Organisation Scientific Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE and is a member of the National Advisory Group on Immunization in South Africa. Shabir has co-authored over 650 scientific publications since 1997, and has an H-index of 103. His research has focused on the epidemiology, and clinical development of lifesaving vaccines against pneumonia and diarrheal disease. Over the past decade, he has focussed on vaccines being developed for immunization of pregnant women for the benefit of the women and their young infants. He led the first two COVID-19 vaccine studies undertaken in Africa, and was also involved in multiple clinical and serology epidemiology studies on COVID-19.

After more than 40 years of service to the University of Witwatersrand, Prof Pravin Manga has been honoured with the status of Emeritus Professor for his outstanding contribution to the University. Academic Head of Internal Medicine, Professor Pravin Manga, spent the majority of his 40 years post qualification in the public service. He completed his internship at the then Coronation Hospital and subsequently did his Registrar training in internal medicine at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. He was attracted to cardiology and gained a fellowship position to train at Tulane University in the United States of America. On his return to South Africa, he was appointed Head of Cardiology at the Hillbrow Hospital. With a passion for interventional cardiology, he completed his PhD in this area, pioneered the first program of balloon valvuloplasty for the treatment of rheumatic mitral stenosis in the country and became an international expert on this subject. In 1995 he was appointed Chief Specialist, Professor and Academic Head of Cardiology and later Academic Head of the Department of Internal Medicine in the School of Clinical Medicine until his retirement in 2016. In this time, he was known for running a patient focused unit, launching the only 24-hour cardiac cath lab service in a public hospital in South Africa. He has had the distinction of being the past President of the South African Cardiac Society and still serves/ served on the board of the South African Heart Association. His research focused on valvular and ischemic heart disease, and he still serves as the Deputy Editor of the Journal of American College of Cardiology, the number one rated cardiovascular journal in the world. Prof Manga will continue to pursue his research interests and teaching; staying on in the Division of Cardiology. In addition, he will also start a new journal for the School of Clinical Medicine. The Faculty would like to thank Prof Manga for his service and congratulates him on his Emeritus Professor appointment.

He demonstrated the clinical relevance of Africa’s genomic diversity, especially with respect to the safe use of anti-retroviral drugs. He is a Distinguished Professor of Health Sciences (Witwatersrand University, South Africa), and a Fellow of the Zimbabwe Academy of Sciences and the African Academy of Sciences. He received many awards including the HUGO Africa Award (2018). Prof Masimirembwa studied at the University of Zimbabwe and the Karolinska Institute, Sweden (PhD). Read Bio André Mochan Sunday, 22 October 2023 - Session 3 Presentation Topic: CNS Autoimmune Disorders Prof André Mochan is an Associate Professor in the Division of Neurology and has been Clinical Head of Neurology at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital since 2009. He has now been appointed Academic Head of Neurology in the Department of Neurosciences in the School of Clinical Medicine. After completion of his medical undergraduate training at LMU Munich, Germany, he spent his internship year at Baragwanath Hospital, and thereafter never turned back, completing all postgraduate and specialist neurology training and further education there and at the University of the Witwatersrand. Prof Mochan has been awarded several prizes as student, Registrar and Consultant, including the Neurology Association of South Africa Novartis award. He has a wide portfolio of completed graduate and postgraduate supervision, including several MMeds, BTechs and MTechs. Prof Mochan is a senior examiner/convener/moderator for the Fellowship of the College of Neurology in the CMSA; he is the WITS representative on the College of Neurology Executive Committee and heads the examinations portfolio. He is the current Secretary of the College of Neurology. Prof Mochan is also an executive member and recent office bearer of the Neurology Association of South Africa (NASA). His early academic career has been largely influenced and shaped by the HIV epidemic, leading to an interest in the wide variety of its neurological manifestations. This has led to numerous publications to ultimately characterise and improve diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with HIV related neurological diseases in our setting. He was part of the initial description of the late Efavirenz induced ataxia-encephalopathy syndrome. In 2014 he established a dedicated multidisciplinary Motor Neuron Disease / Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (MND/ALS) Clinic at Chris Hani Bara, the only such clinic outside Cape Town in the country. Through the MND/ALS clinic he participates in the drive for yet non-existent genomic research on African ALS patients and is Co-Principal Investigator of the newly launched ALS-Africa NET study employing cutting edge WGS techniques, performed locally, to characterise uncharted genes in ALS. He also is the initiator and Principal Investigator of the South African Neurology COVID-19 database. Prof Mochan is a regular reviewer for many prestigious journals and has been invited to write editorials, most recently for the Journal of Neurological Sciences.

Her responsibilities include clinical care, training, palliative care research and advocacy. She had an opportunity to serve in the National Steering Committee for Palliative Care that developed the Palliative Care Policy, under the leadership of the current Deputy Minister Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo. As part of advocacy, Dr Ratshikana has been instrumental in sourcing funding for national implementation of the Palliative Care Policy, expanding palliative care to other hospitals, establishing the new comprehensive adult oncology unit at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital She has developed short courses to upskill health professionals and others to meet the unique needs of palliative care patients and their families to improve their quality of life. Dr Ratshikana have a special interest in spiritual care, a neglected component in palliative care, and is currently working towards integrating this important intervention as part of holistic patient centered palliative care in the public sector.

He completed all of his training in South Africa at the University of Cape Town. Dr. Brent Tipping heads up our Geriatric Medicine Unit, that has been part of the WDGMC since 2007. The unit provides comprehensive geriatric assessments and assists patients in the management of various complex physical and cognitive problems associated with the frail older person.

Read Bio Jeffrey Wing Saturday, 21 October 2023 - Session 6 Session Chair Presentation Topic: Introduction to Cardiometabolic Medicine Prof Jeffrey Wing has been in clinical practice since 2002 at the Wits Donald Gordon Faculty Practice with three sessions per week and River Park PHC in Alexandra once weekly (as part of the international Cities Changing Diabetes program). He is also the Chief Editor (since 2017) of the Journal of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes South Africa (JEMDSA). He currently holds the following positions: - Project Leader (PI) Equivalent Equity Investment Program (2021 – present) - Enterprise Development (Department of Trade and Industry) - Implement and Integrate aspects of universal health care (Department of Health) - Establish Cardio-Metabolic-Renal Medicine / integrated service and training (Novo-Nordisk Pty LTD) and collaborate with other Universities (Wits-UP-SMU to date) and stakeholders (Provincial, Local Health Departments, NGOs and private companies) to implement the program. - He is also a member on the UJ Faculty Committee (since 2020) to enrol medical students in 2026 to the newly establish Medical School, University of Johannesburg. His roll is to establish a new clinical academic health platform for UJ. - Member of the Clinical Risk Committee at the Clinix Hospital Group. Prof Wing remains an active clinician, teach and train and initiate new projects. He spends quality time with his family (partner, two daughters, extended family members and importantly, all the pets) every weekend.
