Based on SDG No. 10 "reduced inequalities", this sub-forum will encourage participants to consider the ways to improve cultural communication with ethnic minorities and move towards an inclusive society. As part of the Community Shaper 2030 series, this sub-forum also aims to review the current solutions for equal opportunities among ethnic minorities and to inspire new solutions. This session is also sponsored by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC).


This session emphasises the role of social work "S" in ESG work and how to balance different stakeholders while creating an inclusive community.

Opening Speech

Jonathan Lai

Chairman at China Hong Kong Culture Exchange Association

Chairman of the EDUC Advisory Committee of Hong Kong Baptist University


Mr. Jonathan Lai is the Chairman of the China Hong Kong Culture Exchange Association and the EDUC Advisory Committee of Hong Kong Baptist University. He has been a school head of two secondary schools in Hong Kong after leaving the HK-SAR Education Bureau before the turn of the century.  He is now the principal of his alma mater, Lee Kau Yan Memorial School.


Mr. Lai has immense interest in studying the governance of public organizations and exploring ways to get these public corporations such as schools connected with the community and the global environment. He holds a Master Degree in public administration conferred by the University of Hong Kong and one in Language Studies awarded by the Hong Kong Baptist University on top of his B.A. (Hons.) in Chinese and English granted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. 



Ricky Chu Man-Kin, IDS

Chairperson at Equal Opportunities Commission


Mr Ricky CHU Man-kin took the helm as Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) on 11 April 2019, leading and steering the operation of the Commission to enforce the anti-discrimination ordinances and promote the value of equal opportunities in Hong Kong.


Mr Chu joined the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in 1978 as an investigator, and rose through the ranks to become the Assistant Director of Operations and Acting Director of Corruption Prevention. In 2010, he left the ICAC to join the Independent Police Complaints Council (IPCC) as its Secretary-General, leading the Secretariat to assist Council members in monitoring and reviewing the handling and investigation of complaints against the Police.


Mr Chu re-joined the ICAC in 2016 as the Director of Investigation and retired from the Commission in 2019, when he was awarded the Hong Kong ICAC Medal for Distinguished Service (IDS) in 2019.


Mr Chu graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor Degree in Social Science. He also holds a UK law degree.



Jonathan Ho Kai-ming, JP

Under Secretary for Labour and Welfare at Labour and Welfare Bureau


Mr Jonathan Ho Kai Ming took the position as Under Secretary for Labour and Welfare at Labour and Welfare Bureau on 1 June 2020, assisting in drawing up the livelihood policies in labour and welfare sectors in Hong Kong.


Mr Ho is also former Legislative Council Member in labour sector (2016-2020) and District Council Member in Kwun Tong (2012-2019).


Mr Ho graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor Degree in Arts. He also holds a postgraduate diploma in education.



Kwok-Ho Leung

Principal at CUHK FAA Thomas Cheung Secondary School


Mr Kwok Ho Leung is the principal of the CUHK FAA Thomas Cheung Secondary School.  


Mr Leung is an advocate of lifelong learning because not only is it a way to find innovative solutions to educational problems, it is also a way to equip oneself for shouldering more responsibilities. Having obtained a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics from the City University of Hong Kong and a Bachelor of Science from Chinese University of Hong Kong. In order to further his knowledge in school management, he also obtained a Master of Education in School Leadership and Management from Hong Kong Baptist University.

Nelson Yip, MH

Founder and CEO of China Hong Kong Culture Exchange Association


Nelson is the Founding CEO and Director of China Hong Kong Culture Exchange Association, Unleash Foundation, Appetizup Company Limited, and EP Venture Limited. His experiences and superior capabilities have transformed and improved startups, public and private organizations. He is passionate about social empowerment, innovation, and cultural education. Apart from his involvement in NGOs and public services, he is also interested in business strategy consulting, particularly in ESG and CSR practices.




Challenges are never an obstacle to Nelson. He views them as a motivation to improve further. Having contracted cerebral palsy as an infant, he was a frequent visitor at the hospital. The road was not easy but he made his way and was awarded a BSc in Statistics and Computer Science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He also completed the Master of Arts in Quantitative Analysis in Business from the City University of Hong Kong and a Master of Business Administration from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Disability and rehabilitation are issues that remain close to his heart and with which he devoted a lot of his energy.

Representative of Above Challenge


Above Challenge is a series of activities we create to connect different people in Hong Kong to raise the awareness of Inclusion, Innovation and Sportsmanship in a fun way to overcome challenges. This program will improve empathy, cultural confidence and critical thinking throughout varied activities including E-sport, adventures, observation and experiential games. The program is also aiming to promote positive messages in Social Inclusion and Self-development for better society and community in Hong Kong.

UPOWER Limited is a Social Enterprise that aims to advocate for the rights of the disabled and to build a diverse and inclusive society. We will empower people with challenges on work inclusion, and discover new employment opportunities for both the disabled and their employers.

Heart to Hear, a recently founded youth-led project in August 2020. We passionately believe that everyone is entitled to an equal opportunity to enjoy social life regardless of any disabilities they are experiencing. 

A healthy social life enhances one's well-being and happiness, and this should not be deprived. Through social media and upcoming fundraising events, we aim to raise public awareness and encourage inclusion and empathy to these minorities in society. 


This project initially focuses on those who are experiencing impaired hearing or total hearing loss. Nonetheless, we are diversifying our message and objectives to those with any disabilities, both mentally and physically. 


We are launching our very first fundraising t-shirt sale in February. Please follow us on Instagram @hearttohearhongkong and check out our charitable fashion brand @able.hk that will be launching soon!
