The Water Services Providers Association (WASPA) together with her partners, the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation (MWSI), the County Government of Nakuru, and Women in Water & Sanitation Association (WIWAS) seeks applications for the Youth and Women Innovation Award on the topic "Unlocking potentials of Women and Youth for sustainable water and sanitation services". The award seeks to recognize innovative solutions from Youth and Women in Kenya that promote access to water and sanitation services that make a difference in promoting healthy, safe, and productive lives for all. 

Submissions for the award must be innovative, contextually grounded, practical, and designed in response to on-the-ground needs and should be relevant to strengthening water and sanitation systems. Innovative solutions may target individuals, families, communities, urban planners, service providers, or water and sanitation infrastructure, networks, and systems. Solutions may include but are not limited to: services, models, tools, or advocacy strategies intended to improve overall access to water and sanitation services. Solutions should apply a deeper understanding of users' (customers/providers) needs when designing programs, services, and products/interventions. Submissions will be evaluated for originality, sustainability, and applicability.

PRIORITIES

  • Innovations that address current inequities in access to water and sanitation services;
  • Innovations that prioritize marginalized populations, considering specifically those marginalized by their physical/intellectual disability, economic status, religion, age, marital status, gender, profession, location, literacy or lack thereof;
  • Innovations that consider Design Principles of: 
  1. Design with the User
  2. Understand the existing ecosystem
  3. Design for scale
  4. Build for sustainability 
  5. Use open standards, open data, open-source, open innovation (*if/where possible)
  6. Reuse and improve (*if/where possible) 
  7. Do no harm

AWARD INFORMATION

The Innovations award committee will shortlist innovators to participate in an interactive workshop to present their solutions/case studies to a panel of water and sanitation experts. Three finalists in each category will be selected to pitch their innovations and awarded at the Gala event of the Youth and Women Water and Sanitation Conference 2021 that will be held in JULY 1st, 2021 in Nakuru County. 



ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

The Innovation Award is open to Youth (aged 18-35 years) and women working as individuals or in community-based organizations, non-profit organizations, for-profit enterprises, national and county government agencies, academic and technical institutions. The innovation must be based in Kenya.
