Workshop-style session led by Andie Conching, Carly Coleman & Jason Seto based on abstract titled “Sense of Place”: Connections Within Wai‘anae Moku.
As awareness of the impacts that social and cultural factors have on healthcare and health outcomes increases, medical school curricula accommodate these changes by shifting towards education that emphasizes social, cultural and holistic care of the patient. One important aspect of health and well-being largely ignored in traditional medical education is something that we, at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), refer to as “Sense of Place”. This phrase encompasses the acknowledgement of the importance of connecting to the land and its people, and the belief that cultivating this connection throughout medical training leads to improved patient care.

Workshop-style session on the Indigenous Physician Health Network led by Randi George, MD, Kelly Soros, MD, RN & Georgia Vermette, MD.
The idea to create a British Columbia Indigenous Physicians Health Network began in 2016 and after initial engagement with various stakeholders, a partnership between the Rural Coordination Centre of BC, UBC Undergraduate and Post-Graduate Medical Programs, and FNHA was forged. The initial workshop to develop the concepts behind the network was in 2018 at a smaller in-person gathering, that has now grown to become an annual gathering of BC Indigenous physicians, residents, and students and a small group of allies. The energy and momentum from the last three years has inspired a number of initiatives including a BC IPN Listserv and a BC Indigenous Mentorship Program. The BC IPN Committee would like to use photos and a storytelling approach to bring participants on a journey of how this initiative started and what it has meant to those involved. This approach aligns with our principles to include culture, Elders, and ceremony is threaded within everything we do.

The National Consortium on Indigenous Medical Education (NCIME) led by Dr. Marcia Anderson.
The National Consortium for Indigenous Medical Education is an important step towards addressing anti-Indigenous racism in medical education and health care. Training physicians who can practice medicine in ways that meet the needs of Indigenous Peoples requires Indigenous leadership, learning environments that are free of racism, and assessment processes that ensure physicians have anti-racism and cultural safety knowledge and skills. This will require widespread structural reform, NCIME is committed to working with all partners to implement Indigenous-led solutions in health care education and service delivery. With the leadership from and support of the NCIME, national medical education organizations are fulfilling their responsibilities to respond to the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in Indigenous Medical Education through supporting Indigenous leadership. Aligning and collaborating on strategic priorities; and maximizing available resources.
